Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang believes that the AGI era has begun. Huang claims OpenAI's GPT-6 Astra is AGI, potentially marking a major milestone for the AI industry.Jensen Huang believes GPT-6 Astra is the start of AGI. The world may be about to change. After years of debate over AGI, or artificial general intelligence, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang believes that OpenAI’s new AI model GPT-6 Astra may have finally reached this stage, potentially bringing one of the biggest shifts in the AI industry. In a post on X, Huang congratulated OpenAI for developing Astra just 4 years after the AI startup launched ChatGPT, stating, “AGI has arrived.” He added that Astra was “trained on ~100K plus Nvidia Grace Blackwell NVLink72.” The Nvidia CEO revealed that the company planned to bring over 4,00,000 more GPUs online soon. Jensen Huang says AGI has arrived with GPT-6 Astra. Is GPT-6 Astra AGI?AGI, or artificial general intelligence, is a term used broadly to describe an AI model that can start to think and reason like humans, or match humans in various tasks. Experts say that AGI can potentially surpass human knowledge. As AI models have become better, reaching AGI became a goal for various AI labs, including OpenAI and Anthropic.Though AGI remains a contested term. OpenAI defines AGI as “highly autonomous systems that outperform humans at most economically valuable work.” Jensen Huang’s comments indicate that GPT-6 Astra may be the biggest leap in terms of frontier AI models that we have seen recently. OpenAI President Greg Brockman agreed with the Nvidia chief. “We're now moving into the AGI era (whether you view it as this model, the last one, or the next one), and could not do it without close partners,” he replied. Nvidia remains one of OpenAI’s biggest partners. As per OpenAI, most of its training fleet and inference infrastructure continues to run on Nvidia GPUs. Greg Brockman says the world is now entering the AGI era. Previously, OpenAI President Greg Brockman said, "It’s not unreasonable to feel that we are now (with Astra) in the AGI era.” "I think that if we fast-forward a couple of years, when we look back and say, ‘When was it really that AGI was created?’ I think it's going to be about this time, and I think it might be about this model,” Brockman explained. But not everyone agrees that GPT-6 Astra is the start of the AGI era. AI critic Gary Marcus wrote on X, “Sad to see Jensen claim that AGI has arrived, with no evidence and no definitions.” Marcus claimed, “By conventional definitions, Astra still falls short. Declaring victory without a definition simply muddies the waters.” Critics are not so convinced. How good is GPT-6 Astra?OpenAI calls Astra its most powerful AI model yet. As per the company, Astra can perform tasks involving computer use, software engineering, cybersecurity, science and other professional work. In benchmarks, the AI model has also outperformed rival frontier models including Anthropic’s Mythos 5.1.In a separate post, OpenAI’s Codex head, Thibault Sottiaux, claimed that Astra was so good that the company was now planning to release new products 6 months ahead of its original timeline. Astra is helping OpenAI ship new things faster. At the same time, OpenAI says that it has built more safeguards around Astra which can help mitigate cybersecurity risks. The company claims Astra is its “most aligned mode yet.” In evaluation tests based on the Hugging Face breach, OpenAi found that GPT-6 Astra went beyond an authorised target in 0 per cent of cases, compared with 48% for GPT-5.6 Sol without production safeguards.GPT-6 Astra is available for ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise users. The model can also be used via API.- EndsPublished By: Armaan AgarwalPublished On: Sep 7, 2026 08:44 IST
