Nursery fined £7k after baby suffers burns from bleach and boiling water

See more Daily Mail on Google - save us as a Preferred Source Published: 15:11 EDT, 31 August 2026 | Updated: 15:11 EDT, 31 August 2026 A nursery has been fined after a ten-month-old boy was badly burnt by bleach and boiling water.The boy was attending Little Dreams Nursery in Aberdeen in 2021 when he was left with agonising injuries as the room he was in was being cleaned.The nursery has now been fined £7,850 after admitting to failings which enabled the child to ‘access a bucket containing boiling water and bleach’ and tip the contents over himself ‘all to his severe injury’.Court papers stated that the nursery failed to have a ‘suitable and sufficient risk assessment for the cleaning of the premises’ and had failed to implement a ‘safe system of work’ contrary to health and safety at work laws.The boy’s mother previously told how her son risked being ‘scarred for life’ after he was left screaming in agony for an hour after staff did not call an ambulance and waited for his parents to collect him instead. Little Dreams Nursery in AberdeenThe child, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was later treated at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary where he was put under general anaesthetic for a ‘skin scrub’ and received six layers of bandages.His family was awarded a five-figure compensation payout in 2023 which is being set aside in a trust for when he turns 16.In a statement through law firm Digby Brown, they said: ‘We’ve had to wait five years for Little Dreams Nursery to admit what happened to our son was their fault but we don’t feel the severity of his injuries have been acknowledged.‘We trusted them to take care of him and for such an injury to happen to a ten-month-old baby is indefensible.‘In the months and years that followed we had to watch our boy deal with the consequences of something that was never his fault.’ They now plan to ‘close the most horrific chapter of our lives’, adding: ‘No parent should have to experience that.’At Aberdeen Sheriff Court, the nursery admitted breaching health and safety regulations. A previous investigation by the Care Inspectorate found ‘staff should have contacted the emergency services, immediately’.Little Dreams Nursery said the ‘safety, wellbeing and care’ of every child entrusted to them was of the ‘highest priority’.A spokesman added: ‘We deeply regret that this incident was able to occur and are profoundly sorry for the distress and impact it has had on the child and their family.‘We accepted responsibility for the failing identified and pleaded guilty as soon as we were able.’
