The song was such a huge hit, she became the youngest solo artist in history to score a Number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. That same year the singer also released her self-titled debut album under the controversial record label Blackground, which was founded by Barry Hankerson – singer Aaliyah’s uncle who also acted as her manager before the star’s death in 2001. Previously speaking to Refinery 29 about the ups and downs of her career, JoJo said: “I’m definitely not somebody to feel bad for. “I’m definitely a story of grit and resilience and perseverance. “I think that’s what defines me. “More of what I was speaking to before is a general sense of fakeness in the industry – that people say that they want to do something but don’t do it.” JoJo has also enjoyed a film career and starred in several movies in the mid-noughties.
