Northrop Grumman has introduced Raid Hunter, a new short-range air defense system designed to protect military bases and other critical sites from large-scale aerial attacks. Unveiled Wednesday, the 50mm gun-based system is built to counter cruise missiles, drone swarms, and other threats that could overwhelm existing defenses. The company is developing Raid Hunter to address a short-range air defense gap. Its design focuses on striking multiple targets quickly while giving military forces a mobile system that can be moved and deployed where protection is needed. A 50mm gun built for mass attacks Raid Hunter combines Northrop Grumman’s Chain Gun technology with precision-guided 50mm ammunition and a networked system controller. The setup is designed to connect with other defense systems and coordinate engagements against different types of airborne threats. The company says the system can handle mixed raids involving cruise missiles, unmanned aircraft and other advanced threats. Deep ammunition magazines and rapid reload capability support its high-rate-of-fire gun. Northrop Grumman has built the system around a modular, palletized configuration that can be transported aboard C-130 aircraft. This approach could allow military units to move the weapon system between locations as defensive requirements change. The company is also planning vehicle-mounted and container-based versions, giving forces additional deployment options. The modular design could make Raid Hunter suitable for locations where permanent air defense installations are impractical. It also gives a pathway for adapting the system to different operational environments. Testing planned for faster fielding Northrop Grumman expects Raid Hunter to operate as part of a broader layered air defense network. The system is intended to focus on high-priority aerial targets while supporting defenses against attacks involving large numbers of incoming objects. The weapon joins the company’s Raid Defense Solutions portfolio, which includes counter-drone and air defense technologies. That portfolio brings together kinetic weapons, sensor fusion and command-and-control capabilities for networked defensive operations. The defense firm is working with government and allied partners as it develops Raid Hunter. Testing planned throughout the year will evaluate the system’s performance and help determine how quickly it can move toward operational deployment.
