Nobody in the NFL Is Dominating Opponents Like the Jacksonville Jaguars

Mandatory Credit: Kirby Lee-Imagn Images The Jacksonville Jaguars have pretty much always been a team of up-and-down blips instead of extended success.Since winning 11-plus games in three straight seasons from 1997-99, the Jaguars had just three double-digit-win seasons from 2000-24. This century, Jacksonville has had consecutive winning seasons just twice, in 2004-25 and 2022-23, with no consecutive playoff appearances. That all seems to be changing under Liam Coen, who has quickly made the Jaguars a juggernaut. In his first season as a head coach last fall, Coen led Jacksonville to a 13-4 record, second-best in franchise history and just one off the record of 14 wins set back in 1999.In Year 2, the Jaguars already have a three-game lead in the AFC South and seem poised to run away with the division for a second straight season -- which would be another first this century for the franchise -- and stand out as a major threat in the AFC come playoff time.Because the Jaguars aren’t just beating teams. They’re dismantling them.Through eight weeks of the 2026 season, there have been 10 games decided by 24 or more points. The Jaguars are the only team that has more than one. After its 42-7 demolition of the visiting Colts last week, Jacksonville (5-2) has more wins by 24-plus points this season (three) than by less than 24 points (two). That’s uncommon in the NFL, a league which is supposed to be built on parity and the idea that any team can be another team in any given week. It’s a testament to how well the Jaguars are clicking on all cylinders. They lead the league in rushing defense (77.4 yards per game allowed), are tied for the lead in turnover margin (plus-seven), rank second in scoring defense (15.9 points per game allowed) and fifth in scoring offense (28.0 ppg). They’re anchored by Trevor Lawrence, a lost-soul quarterback who has rediscovered his way under Coen’s tutelage and currently has the fifth-best MVP odds this season with 1,690 passing yards and 17 touchdowns against four interceptions.Jacksonville is the total package, a dark horse in the AFC behind the brand names such as the Bills, Broncos and Chiefs. It bears mentioning that each of the three blowout victories came at home while the Jaguars are 2-2 away from home this season, losing at Denver in Week 2, winning at Cincinnati in Week 4 and splitting a pair of games in London. That may be the final hurdle for these Jaguars to prove their legitimacy. Since Coen took over, they’re 10-2 at home and 8-5 on the road. The Ravens’ roster is in a state of flux right now with undrafted rookie Joe Fagnano starting at quarterback — surely Jacoby Brissett won't suit up with no formal workouts with the team, right? — when Baltimore hosts Jacksonville Thursday night, no one should be surprised when Jacksonville secured its fourth runaway victory of the season.
