A troubled chief (Microsoft) A sequel to Halo Infinite is still a long way off according to a trusted leaker, as concern grows for the franchise’s future. Halo may have catapulted Microsoft into the console space with the original Xbox, but the series has failed to maintain that same level of popularity over the past decade. The last mainline title, 2021’s Halo Infinite, was relatively well received but was hamstrung by poor post-launch support. Later in 2024, developer Halo Studios said it was working on multiple new Halo titles, with one of them revealed to be Halo: Campaign Evolved – a remake of the original Halo: Combat Evolved in Unreal Engine 5. It was assumed one of these unannounced titles would be a sequel to Halo Infinite, but according to a leaker, Halo Studios currently doesn’t have any projects in full development for after Halo: Campaign Evolved launches. This comes from YouTuber Rebs Gaming, who is known for accurate Halo leaks. In his latest video, he claims Halo Studios originally planned to launch three games over three years; starting with Halo Campaign Evolved and then followed by a standalone multiplayer project codenamed Ekur, and a ‘new campaign’ game. Ekur, which was said to be an extraction shooter before it was turned into a battle royale title without any classic multiplayer modes, was apparently cancelled sometime last year in order to prioritise development on Halo: Campaign Evolved. Similarly, plans for the ‘new campaign’ title never materialised. According to Rebs Gaming, developing multiple Halo projects at once ‘proved to be too difficult for leadership’. As such, according to his sources, Halo Studios ‘doesn’t have any other mainline campaign or multiplayer project in full development’, and only ‘early concepts for new projects’. ‘Development teams are now trying to hurry up on creating the vision and concepts for the next main Halo game,’ he added. Considering Halo has been bogged by poor management for years, it’s disheartening to hear the cycle is seemingly still repeating itself. According to reports, Xbox CEO Asha Sharma is looking to prioritise Halo as part of her big ‘reset’, but if the above report is true, the sequel to Halo Infinite is going to be at least three years away and probably much more. Elsewhere in the video, Rebs Gaming claims there is ‘uncertainty’ internally around the rumoured remakes of Halo 2 and 3, with staff ‘concerned’ there could be layoffs after Halo: Campaign Evolved launches on July 28, 2026. Additionally, he claims that the team is ‘exploring possible DLC’ for Halo: Campaign Evolved to fill the gap. It’s said a ‘new Halo experience’ which is early in development could be announced at Halo Fest in December, but this is described as a ‘best case scenario’. Overall, at a time when Xbox is in desperate need of a win, it’s not encouraging to hear Halo Studios (previously 343 Industries) is still scrambling to find its feet all these years later – especially as these new problems suggest that no new Halo game will be available for the launch of Project Helix. The other big question is whether future Halo games will be multiplatform, like Halo: Campaign Evolved. Speaking to GamesRadar, Xbox’s chief strategy officer Matthew Ball affirmed that ‘large live service titles’ – which presumably includes future Halo multiplayer projects – will be multiplatform going forward. However, based on separate comments from chief content officer Matt Booty, this doesn’t mean all of Xbox’s single-player games will be console exclusive either. ‘I wouldn’t overly fixate on single-player,’ Booty said. ‘I think that’s a good rule of thumb, but it certainly isn’t something that’s carved in stone.’ This suggests Xbox’s exclusive strategy is based on vibes and corporate whims, which in turn means the success, or otherwise, of Halo: Campaign Evolved on PlayStation 5 might not necessarily be the deciding factor of whether more Halo games are released on Sony’s console.
