No More Room in Hell 2 has received some massive gameplay overhauls since its early access release back in 2024, with the 1.0 launch addressing some of the biggest concerns with the experience. Although the release has encouraged a mountain of new players to try out its zombie survival gameplay loop, Torn Banner Studios has made it clear that NMRIH2 is far from finished. Arriving just in time for NMRIH2’s 2nd anniversary, the latest 1.2 update, ‘Camp Blood’, brings a heap of new content while addressing some of the biggest concerns with the current state of the game. Alongside the change to go hands-on with the map before release, I also had the opportunity to interview some key developers of NMRIH 2 about what went into the update and what's in store for the future of the franchise. Camp Blood’s Update Has Been A Long Labor Of Love Image from Torn Banner Studios When asked if any specific horror films were used as inspiration for the new Ruby Lake map, which is itself a callback to the similarly named Camp Blood from the original game, the team stated there “wasn’t anything specific” aside from the style of slashers like Friday the 13th, although George Romeroro’s work still remains “the biggest inspiration” for the grounded feeling of NMRIH2’s gameplay and tone. As for the map itself, NRMIH2’s developers noted that while they’ve heard “a lot of feedback on map selection” and are taking it into consideration, it “will take a lot of work and time” before they can implement it. For now, at least, Camp Blood’s Ruby Lake will have priority over the other maps currently available in the map pool. When asked what the developers were most excited for players to try in the new update, the new Responder Retirement mechanic was easily at the top of the list. Aiming to address some of the biggest complaints about MRIH2’s lack of late-game progression, which even the developers have admitted is “the biggest missing aspect,” the mechanic not only adds new incentives for veteran players but also completely reframes the character-leveling experience. Intended for players running out of things to do in NMRIH2, Retirement offers more reasons to “re-roll responders and try out new builds” as you progress to the 100-level mark, where you can send off your Responder to live out a relaxed life in exchange for various rewards, ranging from level boosts for fresh characters to new item loadout slots, and more. Going Hands-On With The New Map Alongside the interview, I was lucky enough to play the new Ruby Lake mission ahead of schedule, which even included a beautifully handmade map of the area that looks like it was pulled straight from a campsite brochure. The map starts with all players gathered around a large campfire with supplies to get you started, then thrusts you into the eerie darkness of the immersive wilderness, where you can easily get lost without paying attention, thanks to the dimly lit environments. Split between defending three areas, a Ranger Station, Camp Pavilion, and Troop Cabin, each with distinct layouts that offer unique encounters and more verticality, making the experience even more immersive. While playing with the developers, we barely managed to hold them back in a kill zone on the Pavilion stairs before trying to board up the Cabin windows. All this was happening while several of us desperately tried to stave off infection from some of the lucky zombies that managed to break through our defenses, which made for one of the most memorable survival experiences I’ve had so far. NMRIH2’s Devs Are Well Aware Of Player Concerns Although I’ve had a great time with NMRIH2 so far, it's hard to ignore the concerns the player base is raising, and the developers at Torn Banner Studios have been “watching what the community wants” to change in future updates. One of these areas comes in the form of the new accessibility changes for NMRIH2, with the new experimental subtitles being “one of the most requested features since launch,” which the developers have been “wanting to go for quite a while, putting it forward with an experimental test even though it's not perfect yet” to get more player feedback. Controller players will also be happy to hear that several new features, like individually adjustable controller dead zones and an updated inventory wheel I saw during the preview, will make playing significantly easier. It isn’t just the negative side of things that Torn Banner Studios is keeping an eye on, as the team was ecstatic about “how engaged the community was” over the Discord cat contest, which saw the two bracket winners added to the game as cosmetics in the Killer Cat pack. When asked if future events were planned, NMRIH2’s developers stated that the original event was a “very impromptu thing when looking at some of the cat bracket,” and that they would rather wait until another opportunity for a fun community event arises naturally instead of forcing another so soon. What’s Next For No More Room In Hell Moving into the upcoming changes to the progression-locked solo mode, the update is one of the “biggest ones in the future being worked on,” and the developers are currently looking at making it completely separate from standard multiplayer progression. On top of Solo mode, “reworks adding Survival mode replayability are still coming,” but noted that the community has been “mostly asking for objective maps, so that’s currently the focus.” Tying into the new upgrades offered by Responder retirement, Torn Banner Studios also noted they’ll be invaluable for the upcoming Hell mode, which is NMRIH2’s “answer to satiate the glutton for punishment type players.” Rather than just a new difficulty after Extreme, Hell Mode will act as an incredibly difficult weekly challenge with new modifiers for a specific map, encouraging players to “work together as a community to overcome each week,” which will have unique rewards for anyone who can survive it. In terms of new weapons and types of infected, NMRIH2’s developers noted that they’re working on “some new firearms to fill in the weapon gaps for some ammo types,” while fans can also look forward to “new thematic zombies based on specific objective maps” in the future that will remain grounded and focused on how their gear changes your encounters, rather than new supernatural infected. I was also curious about future collaboration events, and while the developers were excited about the idea, they weren’t ready to reveal anything yet, but noted that the supernatural elements of its hallucinations could open the door to more unique horror potential. While not on the chopping block explicitly for future collaborations, the devs noted they were fans of the Fear, Resident Evil, and Phasmophobia franchises especially. Fans of the original NMRIH will also be happy to hear that while a lot of core features from the first game were already added with the 1.0 release, the developers are always looking for "opportunities that fit a certain map or mode” to bring content over, although they “weren’t ready to talk about it in specifics just yet.” Even without too many details about what’s specifically to come just yet or when fans can expect to see them added, the concepts already seem to be in the right direction to help No More Room In Hell 2 reach its full potential as a classic zombie survival game, and one that we’ll definitely be keeping an eye on in the future.
