No fuel surcharge on Kerala electricity bills in August

A view of a Kerala State Electricity Board's sub station. | Photo Credit: THULASI KAKKAT No fuel surcharge will be levied on the electricity bills of monthly and bi-monthly-billed consumers in August.The Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) was supposed to levy the surcharge in August from individual consumers to make up for the additional liability incurred on power purchases in June this year.The additional liability in June was ₹1.26 crore only. After the adjustments from the previous month’s savings, the per-consumer fuel surcharge was rounded off to zero paise per unit. Thermal fuel surcharge is collected from consumers to make up for the changes in cost of fuel used in thermal generating stations – the Central Generating Stations and Independent Power Producers approved by the Kerala State Electricity Regulatory Commission.Fuel surcharge is collected from electricity consumers under an automatic cost-recovery mechanism. The fuel surcharge adjustment is uniformly applicable to all electricity consumers. However, domestic consumers with connected load of 1,000 Watts or below with monthly consumption of 40 units and below, and consumers who avail power at green energy tariff, for the quantum of renewable energy procured from the licensee, are exempted.
