India has no other option but to win against the Netherlands when both teams square off in phase two of the men's hockey World Cup on Saturday, August 22. India will need to sharpen themselves in defence and other areas to ensure that their semi-final hopes don't come to an end.Harmanpreet wants his side to play their best hockey against the Dutch (Courtesy: Hockey India)The equation is simple for the Indian men's hockey team. The margin for error doesn't exist and certainly, there is no more space to have excuses. India will head into the clash against reigning Olympic Champions, the Netherlands, knowing that only a win will do for them. After finishing second in Pool D, India moved into the second phase in a pickle. This is down to the new format introduced by FIH, meaning that the result from the previous pool gets carried on into the new one. India won against Wales and edged past a spirited Pakistan, but the loss to England meant that they will start the second phase on the backfoot. Harmanpreet has already bagged 5 goals in this World Cup, leading the charge as usual. (Photo: Hockey India) To top it all, they will be facing the Netherlands and Argentina, two teams ranked above them in the FIH rankings. A loss on Saturday, August 22 against the Dutch will be curtains for them and their hopes to ending a wait of more than 50 years to make it to the World Cup semi-finals.INDIA VS NETHERLANDS: HEAD-TO-HEADIn the 24 matches that have been played between India and the Netherlands since 2013, it is the Dutch who have won 14 of them. India have secured eight wins against the Dutch, with two of the games ending in draws. The match is known to produce excitement as both teams have scored a combined 102 goals during this time period. That's an average of 4.25 goals per game.India will take solice from the fact that they beat the Dutch the last time they faced each other this year as they beat the Olympic champions 3-2. However, they will be reminded of the pain from 2018 in Bhubaneshwar when Netherlands dumped them out in the quarterfinals.ELIMINATE THE ERRORS For the Indian men's team, it hasn't been the perfect campaign. Actually, far from it. Yes, Harmanpreet Singh has been in sensational form with five goals from three matches. But they haven't kept a clean sheet so far.Even in the match against Pakistan, a game they were expected to win, the Indian team conceded three goals and actually faced a barrage of attacks to end the game. The biggest issue has been the defence and the way it has crumbled under pressure. Against England, India collapsed in the final quarter. Errors have been in coming in from the likes of Jugraj Singh and the midfield seems to be feeling less secure without the presence of a deep-lying playmaker. India have conceded eight goals so far and in comparison, Netherlands have the second-best defence in the tournament, conceding just three.’ !Harmanpreet Singh reflects on India’s victory over Pakistan, the team’s performance and what the result means as they march on at the FIH Hockey World Cup Belgium & Netherlands 2026.Hear from the skipper! pic.twitter.com/fKhrFjvKSm— Hockey India (@TheHockeyIndia) August 19, 2026This has left the attack-minded Hardik Singh and Manpreet Singh a little tied down and there to be overrun. So, what's the only to hit the reset button? Well, play the best possible hockey that is out their. And that's the directive from Harmanpreet Singh to his players."Playing well in patches won't work. We have to play good hockey till the whistle is blown. We have to maintain the same body language and attitude, that is the most important thing," Harmanpreet told PTI ahead of the big match."We have video-analysed our mistakes in the last three matches, and the focus is on not repeating them. Defense has to be impeccable as we know that we can create opportunities in the opponents' circle and earn PC. But mistakes in the backline are not acceptable. We must not concede goals on silly mistakes," he said.Harmanpreet said that his side will need to channel the tactics from their win against the Dutch earlier in the year to secure the points on Saturday."In that match we controlled the ball possession and did not let them win the ball in our half. If we could play with a similar strategy and energy, there is no reason why we can't repeat that."We will focus on rotation, speed and co ordination as a team. We have senior players in every line to guide the youngsters and they should take the responsibility," he said.Missed the IND vs PAK thriller yesterday? And maybe that is in the mind of the Indian captain and coach Craig Fulton. The Indian coach was quick to deflect all the pressure onto the hosts. After all, it is them playing in front of a big home crowd and looking to deliver a first World Cup since 1998."They are Olympic gold medallists and are not in the top three teams for nothing. They have good set-pieces and PCD. We have made some good improvements against them, but we have to be on our game to put pressure on them," Fulton said."We beat Australia in Paris for the first time in 50 years. But that is the stat and we have to do it now in the next 24 hours. We have got a great opportunity and come as underdogs, so all the pressure is on them," he said.Harmanpreet has scored six goals against the Dutch in his career and is happy that people consider his side to be the underdogs in this whole scenario."We have beaten higher-ranked teams before. But it's good that we will enter the field as underdogs. Defeating big teams in front of their crowd boosts confidence. We have a great opportunity and we can do it," he said.THE JERSEY PROBLEMThere is also a small subplot before India face the Netherlands. India might have to switch to their designated white alternate kit on Saturday, with the Dutch ideally going to don their traditional orange. The change avoids a colour clash after Hockey India moved away from India's traditional blue for the 2026 World Cup. The saffron/orange kit has sparked debate, with former player Viren Rasquinha questioning the move, while Hockey India has said it was a technical decision to ensure better visibility against blue playing surfaces.Former India goalkeeper PR Sreejesh has urged the focus to remain on the game, noting that India have used alternate kits at previous World Cups. For Saturday, the white shirt is simply about avoiding the orange-versus-orange clash. The bigger battle, of course, remains on the turf. So, when the hooter goes off on Saturday and it is pushback, India will need to bring their A-game. Maybe even their Plan B, C, D and E also.Because, defeat is simply not an option anymore.- EndsPublished On: Aug 22, 2026 12:22 IST
