No charges over dog attack that killed Christchurch boy

No charges will be laid over the death of a one-year-old Christchurch boy who was attacked by a dog at his home.A police spokesperson said the death of Sonny-Charles Watson had now been referred to the coroner.The boy was attacked by a cross-breed dog that lived at the Basingstoke St, Aranui, property on 14 August.Local Government Minister Simon Watts previously told RNZ the government was reviewing the Dog Control Act to ensure councils had the tools to manage dangerous dogs."The news of this dog attack is devastating and my thoughts are with the child's family and everyone affected."Every New Zealander should be able to feel safe in their community and not fear being attacked by a dangerous and uncontrolled dog."Watts said stronger penalties and greater powers for council officers were among the options being considered as part of the review.A Givealittle page has raised more than $40,000 for the parents of Sonny-Charles Watson.
