Sign in to your TheGamer account We are days away from Fortnite’s highly anticipated Override season, and now that we’ve had a good look at its key art, we know most, if not all, of the crossover characters coming to the live-service game for the gaming legends season. That’s unless Nintendo has a shocking reveal to make on August 20. Don't Do That, Nintendo, Don't Give Us Hope Epic Games Notably, there are no Nintendo-owned characters among the horde of video game icons featured in the key art for Fortnite’s upcoming Override season. That’s because Nintendo has famously passed on the opportunity to have any of its characters show up in the battle royale. One tweet hyping the gaming season now has a lot of you hopeful that might be about to change. “Looks like Fortnite sent us something for Aug 20? Wonder what it does...” is the message posted by Nintendo of America that has given Fortnite players hope. There’s no indication of what exactly the post might mean, but naturally, since this is the internet, people have been letting their imaginations run wild. Is Nintendo Really Going To Finally Let Mario Have A Gun? Some have leaned into the jokey side of things, demanding Nintendo finally put Mario in a game where he can shoot a gun, while others are clinging to the hope that Nintendo might finally be about to reverse course on its Samus decision. It was claimed years ago that Samus almost made it into Fortnite, around the same time that Kratos and Master Chief skins were added. However, Nintendo’s insistence that the skin would only be visible to those playing on Switch meant the deal fell through. Even though the Override season doesn’t start until Thursday, there’s already a theory that Epic approached Nintendo about teaming up only to be told no. That theory is rooted in two characters in the key art who look a lot like they were going to be Mario and Link had Epic managed to pull off the impossible. Despite the tease, the odds of Nintendo putting its characters in Fortnite still feel impossibly long. Even though it has never worked with Epic on that level, Nintendo has always supported Fortnite. The game is available on its consoles, it has previously shared teasers on its socials, and there are even official Fortnite-branded Switch accessories. I’m going to keep believing Samus makes a shocking Fortnite debut two days from now, but the more likely scenario is that Nintendo has a trailer to share, and perhaps a code that will unlock something unrelated to its own IP for those playing on its platforms.
