Here are nine England internationals – with a combined 227 CAPS – who are still without clubs. Chris Smalling – 31 caps The former Manchester United defender has been out of the English top flight for seven years, believe it or not. The centre-back, now 36, had five solid seasons with Serie A side Roma, where he won the UEFA Conference League in 2022. Smalling spent the last two seasons in the Saudi Pro League with Al-Fayha but his contract expired at the end of June. It’s not clear whether he plans to continue playing. Raheem Sterling – 82 caps The 31-year-old left Feyenoord in April after a short four-month stint in the Eredivisie. He failed to impress and featured just eight times under Robin van Persie – and didn’t score a goal. Nathaniel Clyne – 14 caps Clyne left his boyhood club Crystal Palace in June after his second spell with the club came to an end. The right-back, 35, brings plenty of experience after playing 474 times across his entire career. He is yet to make any announcement over his future and has not been linked to any major clubs. Jadon Sancho – 23 caps The winger, 26, is without a club after being released by Manchester United this summer. Sancho, who was on loan at Aston Villa last season, was also linked with Fiorentina and Roma, but now reports claim that a move to Brazilian side Palmeiras could be in the offing. Conor Coady – 10 caps The centre-back has revealed he is searching for a new club after being released by Wrexham just before deadline day. The 33-year-old has been offered a chance to train with Liverpool’s Under-21s to keep himself fit while he attempts to create some interest. He said: “If [Liverpool U21s] need numbers, I’ll jump in and keep myself fit as well. “That’s what it’s looking like at the minute. I’m obviously speaking to my agent about different bits that are going on.” Jamie Vardy – 26 caps The striker is another star whose future appears unclear after leaving Serie A side Cremonense. His short term deal ended at the end of the 2025-26 season and he has since been linked with Wrexham and boyhood club Sheffield Wednesday. Dele Alli – 37 caps The ex-Tottenham star has been searching for a new club for some time since being released by Serie A side Como in September 2025. Since then, the former wonderkid has been linked with Championship teams like West Brom and Birmingham. There have also been claims that Serie A club Monza are ready to offer Alli a short term deal. But it’s not yet clear where he will play – or if he will play again. He scored just twice in 22 appearances last season and in truth he only has seven in the last four seasons. There was speculation he could join League One side Leicester City but the move reportedly collapsed. Nathan Redmond – 1 cap The former Southampton and Norwich star joined Blackburn Rovers on a short term deal in March but is now without a club again. The 32-year-old previously spent two months searching for a new side after leaving Sheffield Wednesday. The winger, who has one cap for the Three Lions, is not understood to be in talks to sign for a new team at present. Comment now
