Nigel Farage faces revived standards probe after uncontested Clacton win

Nigel Farage's suspended parliamentary standards inquiry has restarted after his by-election win in Clacton. The probe could trigger fresh scrutiny and even another vote if he is found in breach.Image used for representational purposes onlyThe UK’s parliamentary standards watchdog has reopened its suspended inquiry into Nigel Farage after the Reform UK leader won a by-election in Clacton-by-Sea that was left uncontested by the main political parties. The by-election was triggered by Farage’s resignation last month after allegations of financial impropriety and the launch of an investigation by the Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards.Farage was re-elected comfortably, but the contest drew criticism from both the government and the Opposition, which called it a sham and a farce. Labour Party chair Bridget Phillipson said, “There’s no hiding place now and Nigel Farage needs to answer to the public as to exactly what’s going on. And this distraction by-election, that’s out of the way now, so we can get on with it.”The inquiry, led by the UK’s Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards, Daniel Greenberg, had been put on hold after Farage resigned and called the by-election. At the time, Farage said only the “people of Clacton should be the judges of my actions”.The parliamentary inquiry will examine whether Farage should have declared a £5 million gift from a Thailand-based businessman before the July 2024 general election. Farage, 62, has maintained that he was not required to make the declaration because he was not in politics when the gift was made. The inquiry has also been widened to examine his links to a convicted fraudster. The by-election produced an unusual field of candidates. Farage’s nearest rival was Count Binface, the satirical persona of British writer Jonathan David Harvey, who has contested elections since 2017 wearing a bin-shaped helmet. Ketankumar Pipaliya, an Indian-origin entrepreneur representing the UK Voice party, was also among the 34 candidates in the race, which was widely expected to favour Farage in his stronghold.Farage won convincingly with 22,239 votes. However, the absence of established rivals in the contest has also raised questions about his position as a credible challenger on the far-right of British politics. While Farage said the result had “stuck up two fingers to the entire political establishment”, both the government and the Opposition said the exercise had been created to “dodge scrutiny”. With the by-election over, the standards inquiry is set to resume.
