Nick Sirianni noncommittal on No. 2 QB job

Published September 30, 2026 02:56 PM While Eagles starting quarterback Jalen Hurts was undergoing a concussion check, Andy Dalton threw a red-zone interception on Monday night. Two days later, coach Nick Sirianni isn’t saying who the backup will be this week.Tanner McKee has previously served as Hurts’ backup, but Dalton beat him out for the No. 2 job for this season.“You know, I have a lot of faith in both of those guys,” Sirianni said, via Johnny Gonigal of pennlive.com. “Obviously, what happened in the game, we don’t want turnovers by anybody. . . . We can’t turn the ball over. We did in that situation, and we lost points because of it. But I still have faith in Tanner, in Andy, in how [rookie] Cole [Payton] is developing. I still have faith in that room.”When asked to clarify the backup job, Sirianni said he previously answered the question how he “wanted” to answer it. He then restated his “faith” in all three backups.Both quarterbacks were inconsistent in training camp, and the Eagles opted to carry four quarterbacks because of the lack of a clear QB2. On third-and-goal from the 2, Dalton hit Bears rookie safety Dillon Thieneman in the hands in the back of the end zone. Hurts returned for the next possession, but the Eagles lost 27-7.“I obviously didn’t see the safety in the middle,” Dalton said. “He just read my eyes real good and made the play. I can’t put this team in that situation.”
