Newly elected Kansas Senator: Schumer viewed by voters as ‘a kind of polarizing figure’

Sen.elect Adam Hamilton (D-KS) reaffirmed on Sunday his plans not to support Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer’s (D-NY) bid for majority leader following Democrats’ successful midterm elections. While speaking with Kristen Welker on Meet the Press, Hamilton was asked about a key debate that’s emerged among Democrats following their decisive victories in the midterm elections this week: whether Schumer is the right fit for majority leader, or if Democrats should select another lawmaker. A significant portion of successful Democrats in key races were more progressive figures who championed socialism and other policies associated with the Democratic Socialists of America, but many newly elected members will also hail from traditionally red states whose voters are more likely to be hostile to such positions.Hamilton, a pastor and more centrist Democrat, defeated Sen. Roger Marshall (R-KS) in a state President Donald Trump won in the 2024 presidential election by 16 percentage points. “You have said you’re not going to support Chuck Schumer as Senate [Majority] Leader,” Welker said. “Why do you think Chuck Schumer’s not right for this moment?”“Well, you know, I mean no disrespect for Chuck Schumer — I just really don’t, and I’ve told him that as well,” he said. “But I think, at least where I live in Kansas, he’s a kind of polarizing figure. My opponent running against me in both debates mentioned Chuck Schumer far more than he ever mentioned me. It was like 17 or 18 times, and you know the TV spots were aimed at, you know, addressing what a lot of people in Kansas feel who may not know Chuck Schumer personally, who don’t know him personally, but, you know, that they perceive him to be further to the left and somebody who’s a divisive figure.”SLOTKIN VOWS TO OPPOSE SCHUMER ‘UNTIL I SEE A PLAN,’ WON’T RULE OUT LEADERSHIP CHANGEMany socialist Democrats have opposed Schumer’s nomination on the grounds he’s too centrist, rather than being too progressive, as policies championed by figures such as New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani and soon-to-be Michigan Sen. Abdul el Sayed (D-MI) have galvanized the Democratic base around the country.“And what we’re looking for is, how do we have, what I’d be looking for, is a leader who can lead from the center. Somebody who can bring Republicans and Democrats together, somebody who can bring the various factions of the Democratic Party together, somebody with fresh ideas. So again, no disrespect for Chuck Schumer, just, it feels like there’s time for, it is a time for fresh and new ideas and somebody who can unite us instead of dividing us.”
