Newcastle in talks to sign Man City star Nico Gonzalez as Matthias Jaissle desperately looks to add to squad

NEWCASTLE are in talks to sign Nico Gonzalez from Manchester City, reports suggest. The Magpies are looking to add reinforcements after a number of their best players were poached by rival clubs. But according to The Athletic, City star Nico is one player on their radar to replenish those numbers for Matthias Jaissle’s squad. The Spaniard, who is yet to earn a senior cap for his nation, arrived at the Etihad in a £52million deal from Porto in February 2025. He went on to make 41 appearances in the 2025/26 season, and 59 overall since his arrival, but fell out of favour under Pep Guardiola when Rodri returned to fitness after an ACL injury. And the midfield flop – a product of Barcelona’s La Masia youth system – only made the bench in Sunday’s 3-0 drubbing by Arsenal in the Community Shield, being brought on by Enzo Maresca in the 78th minute. Despite falling out of favour, the 24-year-old said he had no issue with his game time earlier this month. But he could now become the seventh summer signing of Newcastle’s rebuild window. However, the pair are 20 and 18 years old respectively, so signing Nico would bring far more experience and a head who is familiar with the league straight away. Newcastle kick off their Premier League season by hosting Liverpool on Sunday at 4:30pm. Meanwhile, Man City start their league season at home against Bournemouth on Sunday a couple of hours earlier at 2pm – and will be without their former Ballon d’Or winner Rodri after he sealed a move to Barcelona earlier this week.
