NEWCASTLE have had a £46million bid for Lucas Bergvall turned down by Spurs. It follows Nottingham Forest having a £38m offer for the Swede rejected earlier this month. He is keen for more game-time to boost his development. The midfielder, who played at the World Cup, was largely a back-up player during Roberto De Zerbi‘s successful battle against relegation last season. De Zerbi has since splashed close to £200m on central midfielders Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes from Newcastle and West Ham respectively. It means Bergvall’s opportunities will be even further limited this season, especially with Spurs not in Europe. Bergvall snubbed Barcelona to join Tottenham in summer 2024 and won the Europa League in his first season in N17. Aston Villa came in with a last-minute swoop to steal Johan Manzambi from under the Magpies noses. And earlier on Toon chiefs were forced to pivot their focus to Bazoumana Toure – a £43m buy from Hoffenheim – after Liverpool beat them to the signing of Victor Munoz. So far the club have signed three players; Toure, midfielder Sean Steur from Ajax and goalkeeper Ewen Jaouen from Reims so far this window. All three are 20 years old or younger, with Steur’s fee potentially rising to £23m after an initial £20m purchase and Jaouen’s transfer costing under shy of £25m. Comment now
