New Toby Carvery is confirmed for English seaside town – and will take over 30-year-old Brewers Fayre

TOBY Carvery is taking over a former Brewers Fayre restaurant in a popular seaside town, after the site shut its doors two months ago. The chain will take over the former Duke of York Brewers Fayre in the Dover. The restaurant closed for good in May, ending three decades of service. Toby Carvery showed interest in the empty building just a week after the doors were locked. Sign up for the Money newsletter Thank you! It now plans to reopen the venue later this year, bringing its roast dinners and all-you-can-eat trimmings to Dover. A spokesperson said: “We are delighted to be bringing Toby Carvery, the home of roast, to Dover. “This will be a significant investment and will create a number of jobs – we are excited about the potential for this venue.” The opening will become Toby Carvery’s fifth restaurant in Kent. It already has branches in Thanet, Maidstone, Badgers Mount and Gravesend. The Dover deal comes only days after the company submitted plans to transform another former Whitbread restaurant, a Beefeater in Whitstable. It follows a major shake-up at Whitbread, which owns both Premier Inn and Brewers Fayre, after bosses announced in April they would close all 197 standalone Brewers Fayre and Beefeater sites across the country. Boss Dominic Paul blamed the drastic move on “significant cost increases” caused by the Chancellor’s hikes to National Insurance and business rates, which sent profits plunging 19% to £298million. Under the firm’s five-year survival plan, 110 sites will be sold off and others converted into 600 new Premier Inn rooms, in a bid to save £250million. Comment now
