This article covers a developing story. Continue to check back with us as we will be adding more information as it becomes available. The Last of Us has had a bit of a rough go since The Last of Us Part II was released. The Last of Us Part II was highly controversial when it was released, for instance, and fans had a lot to say about the second season of The Last of Us’ TV show adaptation on HBO. We’ve known that Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet is Naughty Dog’s next game for a little while now, but it’s been uncertain if or when Naughty Dog would be returning to the Last of Us franchise any time soon. The beauty of the Last of Us games is that they both masterfully end in ways that leave them open as cliffhangers for a sequel to resolve, while also telling complete stories that could draw the curtain there and call it quits. Thankfully, it seems as if Naughty Dog hasn’t shelved this IP quite yet. As per The Washington Post, Naughty Dog is, in fact, not ready to part ways with The Last of Us yet. According to The Last of Us’ Neil Druckmann, “There’s a couple projects in the works that, when the time is right, I’m very excited to talk about.” This suggests there are at least two new The Last of Us games fans can look forward to. To be fair, it’s unknown when we might see a new Last of Us game rear its head. Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet will be launching in 2027 at the earliest, and, depending on how far in development either of these confirmed Last of Us projects already is, it could certainly be a long wait. The Last of Us Part III would surely be one of these games, as was expected, considering that The Last of Us Part II’s story concluded with both Ellie and Abby’s stories unresolved and left on cliffhangers themselves. It’s anyone’s guess what the other project could be, however, and yet it’d be neat to finally see the Last of Us Joel and Tommy prequel game that fans have speculated about and desired for so long. Of course, The Last of Us Online was canceled, sadly. What this tells us is that, if Naughty Dog does have “a couple projects” in the works for The Last of Us, there’s an incredibly low likelihood that one of them is multiplayer-centric. That’s too bad, because fans are still mourning The Last of Us’ Factions mode and wish that we got a Factions mode for The Last of Us Part II instead of the No Return roguelike mode. Nonetheless, it’s thrilling to imagine what the future of the franchise will have in store.
