New Thai rules require foreigners to provide fingerprints for background checks

Under the new regulations, criminal background checks for nine specific application categories must now be conducted using fingerprints.The affected categories include critical Immigration Bureau procedures, such as applications for permanent residency and visa extensions. The new rules also apply to Thai citizenship applications processed by the Department of Provincial Administration, according to The Nation.Authorities clarified that criminal record checks can no longer rely solely on an applicant's full name. Instead, individuals must provide fingerprints to verify their identity and complete the screening process accurately.This fingerprint mandate applies to all foreign nationals requesting criminal record checks in Thailand. In addition to the biometric data, applicants must submit an official letter from the relevant government agency or organization when making their request.According to the Bangkok Post, this fingerprinting procedure must be completed at a police station on an annual basis.This timeline aligns with the police force's yearly database clean-ups, which erase the investigation records of individuals who have been cleared of charges, not prosecuted, or acquitted in court.
