New Ted Lasso Reunion Is Officially Changing Genres With Star-Studded Sci-Fi AI Movie

This article covers a developing story. Continue to check back with us as we will be adding more information as it becomes available.A Ted Lasso reunion is in the works on the big screen, but the upcoming movie is very different from the hit Apple TV sports comedy. Ted Lasso debuted in 2020 and stars Jason Sudeikis as the titular coach of a British soccer team. After the series seemingly ended in 2023, Apple TV and Sudeikis brought Ted Lasso back for a fourth season this year, with a focus on the women's soccer team. Other cast members include Juno Temple, Hannah Waddingham, Brett Goldstein, Jeremy Swift, Phil Dunster, Brendan Hunt and Nick Mohammed. Variety reports that Temple has been cast in Bankside Films' new sci-fi AI comedy film called Almost You alongside Joey King and James McAvoy. Ted Lasso director Matt Lipsey is helming the project, with filming now underway in Glasgow, Scotland. Danny Page, Matt Schichter and Rory Stewart are on board as producers. Not only does Almost You serve as a Ted Lasso reunion for Temple and Page, but it also brings McAvoy and Page back together after the latter produced the McAvoy-directed California Schemin'. Almost You revolves around a robotics engineer named Phoebe, who's mourning the loss of her sister, Edie. While attempting to reconcile with her new reality, Phoebe creates an AI version of Edie, but the endeavor has her asking whether she should bring someone back, despite having the ability and technology to do so. In a statement, Lipsey said that "there's never been a movie that needed to be made more than this one." When he started working on Almost You, he thought he was making a futuristic film. "It turns out it's about right now," he explained, adding that Temple, King and McAvoy's performances "will make you laugh, then break your heart, then make you laugh about it." Bankside Films' Stephen Kelliher echoed Lipsey's sentiment about Almost You having "genuine emotional depth and humor," and went on to say that the movie "explores the very human desire to hold on to the people we love, in a world where technology increasingly challenges the boundaries of what is possible." Temple is best known for her TV roles in such shows as Ted Lasso, Fargo and The Offer. Her performance as Keeley Jones on Ted Lasso has earned her a SAG Award and three Emmy nominations. Temple's big-screen credits include Atonement, The Other Boleyn Girl, The Dark Knight Rises, Maleficent, Sin City: A Dame to Kill For, Venom: The Last Dance and Good Luck, Have Fun, Don't Die. Aside from directing several episodes of Ted Lasso and serving as a supervising producer, Lipsey has also directed shows like Intelligence, Turn Up Charlie, Sick Note, Little Britain and Inside No. 9, among others. Apple TV has not officially greenlit Ted Lasso season 5 yet, but Sudeikis has expressed an interest in continuing the story. Even though it's currently unknown whether the series will return, Temple and Lipsey have reunited on a project that tells a very timely and relevant messages. A release date for Almost You hasn't been announced.
