New Star Wars Release Finally Pushes The Jedi In The Right Direction

Come the end of the film, the original trilogy heroes were all gone, and the rising threat of the Sith (and Emperor Palpatine in particular) was finally defeated. However, Lucasfilm and Disney are slowly dipping back into the sequel trilogy era after years away. Next year’s Star Wars: Starfighter will be the furthest set film in canon, taking place five years after the events of The Rise of Skywalker. There are also additional canon stories, such as the new book Star Wars: Legacy. Legacy tells the story of Leia Organa training Rey in between the events of The Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker. The book gives some more details (and teases) on what Rey’s future Jedi order will look like, revealing that Rey will be pushing the group forward in one huge way — by negating the “no attachment” rule. Their training practices, how the group operates, and more were all explained. These were all questions that lingered after the original trilogy, and franchise creator George Lucas finally gave audiences some answers with these details. One of the main aspects of the Jedi in the prequels is their stoic approach to the Force. Leading by example, Jedi Master Yoda pushes for the Jedi to remove attachment from their lives. This includes not having any close loved ones, family, or friends. Anakin Skywalker veered far from these rules when he married Padmé Amidala in secret. These rules regarding attachment ended up being a core reason for Anakin’s fall to the dark side, as Palpatine was able to manipulate the young Jedi’s desire for connection with others and his disconnect from the Order. As a result, the Jedi fell in part because of their strict rules regarding attachment. Fast-forward to the sequel trilogy era, and the Jedi Order is still being rebuilt, this time by Rey. Star Wars: Legacy shows Rey as she contemplates the history of the Jedi and how she wants to move the group forward, even as she’s still a Padawan in training herself. In the book, Rey has a telling line regarding attachment, challenging the Jedi’s previous rules. "Everyone needs something to fight for, and more than just ideas, people." Star Wars: Legacy Fixes The Creative Mistakes Of The Book Of Boba Fett One of the most divisive Star Wars creative decisions made in recent years was in The Book of Boba Fett. While training Grogu, Luke Skywalker reiterates the need for his Jedi students to remain focused and not have attachments, forcing the young child to choose between a path with him or a path with his adoptive father, Din Djarin. This decision was divisive in large part because Luke appeared to have plenty of attachments in the original trilogy, and it was his relationship with Han and Leia that helped push the Rebel Alliance over the line in the Galactic Civil War. Luke going back on that and forcing Grogu to choose between his father and Jedi training was surprising to some because of this. Star Wars: Legacy fixes that error, to a certain extent, by finally showing the Jedi move beyond the no attachment rule. Legacy highlights how Rey will lead with compassion and heart, thus pushing the group forward for the first time in decades.
