New Soulslike game lowers its price so it can compete with GTA 6 and Zelda

A battle for your wallet (Lyrical Games) The developers behind Ghostrunner have announced a cheaper than average price for its next game, due to the overwhelming competition near Christmas. With GTA 6 and The Legend Of Zelda: Ocarina Of Time remake both coming out in November, many companies have chosen to launch games in September and October to avoid trying to compete. This has led to a cluster of major games being released within weeks of each other. It started this week with Marvel’s Wolverine and Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave, but within the next few weeks, we have EA Sports FC 27, Control Resonant, Silent Hill: Townfall, The Witcher 3 Remastered, Star Wars: Galactic Racer, and Gears Of War: E-Day. Another game caught in this release calendar scrum is Valor Mortis, a first person Soulslike from the developers behind Ghostrunner. A new IP was always going to struggle in the mix, but developer One More Level has decided to boost its chances with a cheaper than average price of €39.99 in Europe. A UK price isn’t confirmed, but it should be around £34.99. In a post on X, the studio wrote: ‘We have had many discussions over the past year about the price of Valor Mortis. Delivered to your inbox every Saturday morning. This price is the same as the launch price of One More Level’s previous game, Ghostrunner 2, but it’s cheaper than a lot of the competition around it. Star Wars: Galactic Racer is going for £49.99, while Gears Of War: E-Day is £59.99, for example. Valor Mortis is set to launch on October 13, a week after those two titles, but the developer is releasing a more expensive version for those who fancy it. The deluxe edition, priced at €59.99 (£52), contains access to ‘major story DLC’ launching next year, along with weapon skin cosmetics. The studio says they also have ‘multiple free updates’ planned, that will ‘add more ways to enjoy Valor Mortis in the weeks and months ahead’. The game’s publisher, Lyrical Games, expanded on the reasons for the price point in an interview with The Game Business, describing it as something they ‘really agonised over’. Speaking to the outlet, Lyrical Games boss Blake Rochkind said: ‘My biggest concern was that it would send the wrong message about the game. But this decision is made out of confidence. ‘We find ourselves as one of the only new IPs launching in what is objectively the craziest fall in the history of this business. Not only do you have GTA looming large in November, now you have the Zelda remake, Control [Resonant] coming out in a couple of weeks, Silent Hill: Townfall, Phantom Blade 0, Gears Of War, Call Of Duty… by the virtue of the development schedule, the cards we’ve been dealt is that we are one of the only new IPs launching this fall.’ He added: ‘We are pretty confident in Valor Mortis. But ultimately, the worst thing we could do is not push our chips in and say, ‘we want this to be a game that you can pick up alongside these other great games’.’ Whether the cheaper price helps matters remains to be seen, but it’s a smart way of getting ahead of the competition. The line-up for the rest of October doesn’t slow down either, with Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse, Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, and Phantom Blade 0 all scheduled for later in the month. Valor Mortis is set to launch across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC on October 13, 2026.
