Sign in to your ScreenRant account Silent Hill has done what previously seemed impossible, battling tooth and nail to restore its reputation after a handful of games in the franchise were lackluster and the series went on ice, only to return in 2023 with the egregious Silent Hill: Ascension. However, Bloober’s Silent Hill 2 remake was a godsend a year later, followed shortly by Silent Hill f, which was an enormous breath of fresh air for Silent Hill in many ways. But Silent Hill’s hot streak is likely to continue with Silent Hill: Townfall, releasing this fall in a September that’s stuffed to the gills. This will mark the third excellent Silent Hill game in three consecutive years, though fans seem to still be unsure how they feel about Silent Hill: Townfall’s setting taking the franchise further away from the titular tourist town in Maine. On Reddit, fans are conflicted about whether they appreciate Silent Hill: Townfall following in Silent Hill f’s footsteps and taking place somewhere other than Silent Hill. Indeed, Silent Hill: Townfall takes place in the fictional island town of St. Ameliaon the North Coast of Scotland and, like Silent Hill f,appears to have no ties to Silent Hill. Understandably, some fans think that Silent Hill: Townfall not being set in Silent Hill takes away from it being a Silent Hill game. For instance, user BigBoiBrynBoi writes: “It’s cheapening the concept and essentially paints the message that Silent Hill as a series only needs fog and a rehashed guilty protagonist.” It’s true that calling a game ‘Silent Hill’ only to not have it take place in or have anything ascribed to the town itself is odd, with the argument then being made that it could feasibly be an arbitrary survival horror IP with Silent Hill’s Otherworld. That said, we don’t know that it won’t take place in Silent Hill, at least partially. Of course, there are some Silent Hill games set in Silent Hill that are not great games. It all comes down to how the worldbuilding and lore are treated, and whether new games can commit to and bottle the same brilliant tone and atmosphere that the best Silent Hill games boast. Rather, user Quetzl63 is impartial, believing that it makes little difference whether a Silent Hill game has players actually set foot in Silent Hill: “As long as it is well-written, scary, and fun to play, I’ll be happy.” Fans will be lucky if Silent Hill: Townfall can be the third Silent Hill game in three years to be terrific, and games like Silent Hill 4 and Silent Hill f are proof that that’s not mutually exclusive to it taking place in Silent Hill. Silent Hill: Townfall is scheduled to be released for PC and PS5 on September 24, 2026.
