New PS5 cashback scheme will make digital games cheaper as first trials begin

Sony has received plenty of justifiable criticism over its decision to axe physical PlayStation discs after 2027, but a new cashback scheme is the first sign that they feel they’ve got to do anything to win back customers. As highlighted on Reddit, a new ‘wallet credit’ scheme has popped up for some players on the PlayStation Store, that seems to be a limited trial ahead of a full rollout. In a screenshot, it shows certain games like The Blood Of Dawnwalker are eligible for the scheme, which essentially gives you cash back for a future purchase. According to Reddit user JannJans, they received $10 (£7.50) in wallet credit after purchasing The Blood Of Dawnwalker for $69.99 (£52). This credit can only be used on the PlayStation Store, but it’s still a welcome freebie. At time of writing, Sony hasn’t officially announced anything, but it seems to be isolated to certain users in the US (it wasn’t available for us in the UK), so it’s probably being tested only in certain regions. Based on reports, it also seems to only be available for certain games too, including Halloween, Star Wars Zero Company and Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 2. This isn’t the first time the existence of wallet credit has popped up. In February this year, a mysterious listing for a wallet credits app was found on the PlayStation Store, with players able to ‘wishlist’ it. As of right now though, its release date is still ‘to be determined’. It’s unclear when this scheme will be formally announced, but it’s something which could make the prospect of a digital-only future more palatable on the PlayStation 6. After Sony axed its previous rewards scheme last year though, some kind of replacement should be the bare minimum. Even if this wallet credit scheme does get a worldwide rollout, Sony has a battle on its hands when it comes to repairing its image. Beyond ditching PlayStation discs, Sony continues to push live service games nobody wants, while dropping Hideo Kojima’s Physint.
