| Games News Writer Published October 7, 2026 10:49am Updated October 7, 2026 10:49am A handheld refresh (Sony Interactive Entertainment) Sony seems to be gearing up to announce a new PlayStation Portal, as the company registers two new devices through the Wi-Fi Alliance. While Sony hasn’t announced anything regarding its next generation plans, it’s widely expected to include some sort of handheld. This is based on the word of Sony executives, who have stated the PlayStation 6 will go ‘beyond the living room’, and the success of the PlayStation Portal. The handheld, which allows you to stream your PlayStation 5 and 4 games over the internet, has over a 5% attach rate to PlayStation 5 console owners in the US, according to Circana data. An upgraded OLED PlayStation Portal was previously rumoured to launch this year, and while Sony hasn’t announced anything yet, more evidence has emerged to suggest it is on the way. This comes from two certifications by Sony on Wi-Fi Alliance, an organisation that ensures wireless devices work together without any issues. Both certificates are dated September 21, 2026, and they’re filed under the ‘gaming console/peripherals’ sub-category. So how does this relate to the PlayStation Portal? The two devices have the model numbers CFI-Y2105 and CFI-Y2000, while the current Portal has the model number CFI-Y1001, which suggests they’re related in some way. Want GTA 6 news? Additionally, both these new devices run on Android 15, and the current Portal runs on Android too. The PlayStation 5 console, meanwhile, has a custom OS. If they are revamped PlayStation Portals, they won’t come with improved Wi-Fi capabilities, with both certified for 2.4GHz and 5GHz Wi-Fi, and not the superior 6GHz band. None of the filings imply it will have an OLED screen, but based on the evidence, it’s difficult to see what other improvements it could offer – if it is a new PlayStation Portal. Others have suggested it could be a battery revision to make battery replacement easier, to comply with EU regulations, but the model number implies it is more than that. If a new PlayStation Portal is coming out this year, Sony doesn’t have much time left to announce it. However, with GTA 6 set to launch on November 19, 2026, Sony could drop it around the same time to drive hardware sales within the current PlayStation 5 install base. Alternatively, it might have been pushed back to next year. The original PlayStation Portal launched in 2023 with an 8 inch LCD screen. While it could only initially stream games from your PlayStation 5 console, an update in 2024 gave the device cloud gaming access to those with a PlayStation Plus Premium subscription.
