He has been writing and podcasting about pop culture (especially horror movies) for over a decade at platforms including Blumhouse, Fangoria, Dread Central, The Backlot, and Arrow in the Head. Ahoy, mateys, a new Jack Sparrow has joined the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. The character of Jack Sparrow was originated by Johnny Depp, who played the blowsy swashbuckler in the first film adaptation of the iconic Disney theme park attraction, 2003's The Curse of the Black Pearl, opposite Keira Knightley as Elizabeth Swann and Orlando Bloom as Will Turner. Depp is one of just three actors to have played their original role in all five Pirates of the Caribbean movies other than Kevin McNally as Joshamee Gibbs and Geoffrey Rush as Captain Barbossa (though he only made a cameo appearance in the second installment, 2006's Dead Man's Chest). Per Variety, a new actor will be filling Jack Sparrow's boots in the upcoming London stage production Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean: The Immersive Adventure, which is being mounted by Secret Cinema and TodayTix. The role has gone to 35-year-old English actor George Maguire, who won a Laurence Olivier Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical for his performance in Billy Elliot. In addition to his stage work, he has held onscreen roles in titles including the 2008 horror movie Boogeyman 3 and 13 episodes of the popular British soap opera EastEnders. The production will be fully immersive, blending clips from 2003's Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl with setpieces that can be explored by the audience, live actors with whom they can interact, a live band, and stunts. Performances of the show will take place over the course of two hours. Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean: The Immersive Adventure, which begins previews on February 16, 2027, and opens on March 10 at Secret Cinema's Greenwich Peninsula theater, will also feature Phil Daniels (1979's Quadrophenia) as Captain Barbossa, Lily Blunsom as Elizabeth Swann, Harrison Wilde as Will Turner, and Gleanne Purcell-Brown as Anamaria (the character played by Zoe Saldaña in The Curse of the Black Pearl). Phil Daniels has also appeared on EastEnders, playing Kevin Wicks on 214 episodes. The announcement that a new performer will be portraying Captain Jack Sparrow comes at a time when the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise is in flux. Johnny Depp's most recent performance in the role was in 2017's Dead Men Tell No Tales, which has so far not received a sequel. While a sixth film and a spinoff potentially starring Margot Robbie have been discussed at various points over the years, both movies appear to be stuck in development hell for the time being. In the meantime, the spirit of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise is being kept alive by live performances like George Maguire's, as well as the Disney employees who portray the character in their theme parks. It remains to be seen how the Secret Cinema production performs, but there has been enough demand that they have already added six weeks to their run, so its probable success could prove to Disney that there is still enough interest in the property for one of their in-development projects to finally make it to the big screen.
