Companies are not currently legally required to display wages when advertising jobs in the UK. The Government hopes greater transparency will help tackle wage discrimination and make unfair pay gaps harder to hide. Ministers have launched a 15-week public consultation, allowing workers, employers, unions and members of the public to have their say. The proposals form part of wider plans to simplify equal-pay rules, which ministers say are currently slow and expensive. Officials also want to reduce pressure on workers bringing claims and tackle the backlog of equal-pay cases at employment tribunals. A new enforcement unit could be created with powers to investigate employers and request evidence. Most read in Money Companies could also be required to carry out equal-pay audits or job evaluations in some discrimination cases. The Government plans to consider extending equal-pay protections beyond sex to include race and disability.
