New Order keyboardist Gillian Gilbert says she is ‘living with cancer’

New Order keyboard player Gillian Gilbert has announced she is “living with cancer”.The 65-year-old took to Instagram to clarify it was her who had been diagnosed with the disease and not her husband, the Manchester band’s drummer Stephen Morris, as had previously been reported.She said: “Thank you everyone who has reached out following Stephen’s recent interview with Rolling Stone.“We have both been incredibly touched by all the kind words and well wishes.“I would like to gently clarify a misunderstanding from the interview, in the course of which comments were misinterpreted leading people to believe that Stephen is seriously ill.“Thankfully, he is well. It is in fact me, who like many other people, is living with cancer.“We completely understand how the misunderstanding arose and simply wanted to ensure that the correct information was shared.“We are enormously grateful for everyone’s kindness and support, and would appreciate some privacy as I continue with my treatment.”Phil Cunningham, Bernard Summer, Gillian Gilbert, Tom Chapman and Stephen Morris of New Order (Matt Crossick/PA)PA ArchiveIn the interview with Rolling Stone, Morris had said: “I’ve got a bit of a health problem at the minute, which precludes leaving the country for any length of time, it’s pretty serious.”Formed following the dissolution of Joy Division in 1980 after the death of singer Ian Curtis, New Order have gone on to achieve seven UK top 10 singles and two UK number one albums.Their best-known songs include Blue Monday, Temptation and True Faith while their albums include Power, Corruption And Lies (1983) and Technique (1989).The band’s current line-up consists of singer Bernard Sumner, Morris, Gilbert, guitarist Phil Cunningham and bass player Tom Chapman.New Order are due to perform in South America in November this year.
