Ohio's project will pair on-site generation with battery storage to power a major data center.Veolia A major AI data center campus in Ohio will generate all of its electricity through a dedicated 350 MW microgrid instead of relying on the traditional U.S. power grid. French environmental services company Veolia will operate and maintain the off-grid energy system. The project comes as AI developers increasingly turn to private power infrastructure to avoid years-long waits for grid connections and meet the growing electricity demands of large-scale computing facilities. By generating power on site, developers can bring new data centers online faster while reducing pressure on public electricity networks. Veolia was selected by an undisclosed project developer to oversee the microgrid’s operations, commissioning support and long-term maintenance. The company said the facility will deliver all of the campus’ electricity without depending on the regional power grid. The microgrid combines on-site power generation with a large battery energy storage system, allowing the data center to operate independently while maintaining a continuous power supply for AI workloads. Faster power access According to Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, new power projects spend an average of nearly five years in U.S. interconnection queues before connecting to the grid. The delays have pushed many AI developers to invest in private generation, battery storage and microgrids capable of operating independently. The Ohio project will integrate gas engines, linear generators, battery energy storage systems and medium-voltage infrastructure into a single energy platform. The system will provide 350 MW of generation capacity alongside a 430 MWh battery energy storage system. Veolia said it joined the project before commercial operations to support startup readiness, develop operating procedures and coordinate work among contractors and equipment manufacturers during construction. It will also manage day-to-day operations under a performance-based model designed to maximize uptime and plant performance. “Our work on this project shows how Veolia can help developers accelerate speed-to-power while maintaining the reliability required for mission-critical AI operations, all while protecting the community,” said Karin Hamel, CEO of Veolia Energy, North America and Chief Growth Officer for Veolia in North America. Around-the-clock operations The facility is designed to achieve a 99.9% availability target and will require a dedicated workforce of 35 to 40 full-time employees on site to operate the energy system around the clock. As more AI data centers adopt private power infrastructure, operators are placing greater emphasis on ensuring these systems remain reliable throughout their lifecycle.
