New Linux Patches Tune AMD Ryzen Zen 6 To Optimize Performance & Power Consumption

Ahead of the next-generation AMD Ryzen Zen 6 client processors debuting, an important patch series was posted overnight to the Linux kernel mailing list. These patches provide new Zen 6 client Energy Performance Preference "EPP" tunings that are important for optimizing performance and power consumption for these upcoming AMD Zen 6 desktop and laptop processors. It turns out the upcoming Zen 6 client platforms are utilizing ACPI Energy Performance Preference (EPP) differently than existing generations of Ryzen hardware. The patches are adding new infrastructure to the AMD P-State driver for handling new tuning values for Zen 6 processors to ensure Linux will have optimized performance and power consumption. One of the patches out today reworks the AMD P-State driver code to allow per-SoC and per-core type EPP tuning values for handling both the existing and upcoming AMD processors. The second patch then adds the new Zen 6 tuning values across the different core types and whether the EPP preference is on performance / balance performance / balance power / power modes. Worth noting with these Zen 6 client tunings is that it does set values for the new AMD "Low Power" core type. Linux 7.3 added the bits for the new AMD low-power core that complements the existing performance and efficiency (dense) core types. Based on rumors/leaks and the timing of the patches it was suspected that this low-power core type would appear in at least some Zen 6 client designs. With these EPP tunings is now hard confirmation of performance, efficiency, and low-power core types for Zen 6. The patch also confirms the AMD Zen 6 client models as Family 1Ah with the models of 0x80, 0x81, 0x84, 0x85, and 0xe0. That helps reinforce some earlier Linux patches noting the model 80 processors indeed being client parts. The patches are now out for review on the Linux kernel mailing list. As they don't fall directly under "fixes", they will likely have to wait now until the Linux 7.4 kernel cycle. In turn that will make Linux 7.4 an important target for AMD Ryzen Zen 6 platforms for achieving optimized performance and power consumption, unless these end up being back-ported or picked up by Linux distribution vendor kernels.
