Sign in to your TheGamer account A brand-new Kirby game has been announced at today's Nintendo Direct, and it's taking some cues from recent Nintendo games by going open-world in the aptly titled Kirby and the World Beyond. Although it hasn't really been that long since we've seen Kirby himself thanks to the excellent Air Riders as well as all of the remasters and side games that the pink puffball has starred in, it has been a bit since he had a proper new game. 2022's The Forgotten Land (which also got an expansion last year) was both a landmark moment for the series and the last mainline Kirby entry. With that in mind, a lot of fans expected to get some kind of update on a new Kirby game at today's big Nintendo Direct. That's exactly what ended up happening, as the final reveal of the whole Nintendo Direct was for a brand-new Kirby game that's taking the pink puffball in an open-world direction. The World Beyond Launches Spring 2027 The biggest announcement of the whole Nintendo Direct was fittingly saved right at the end with a brand-new Kirby game, Kirby and the World Beyond, which is launching in Spring 2027. As the name implies, this is Kirby's first open-world game, which has become a bit of a trend with Nintendo games ever since Breath of the Wild. Kirby and the World Beyond's reveal trailer showed Kirby exploring a massive field area and using his abilities, so far including Cutter, Bomb, Parasol (the GOAT), and Sword, to get around the world and find collectibles. We don't know for sure how big the world is, but it's clearly aiming to be the most open Kirby game released so far. We also got a glimpse of the premise of The World Beyond, which shows Kirby smashing King Dedede through a hole in the wall and discovering a massive and presumably open world alongside a companion that totally won't be some cosmic space entity. You know, normal Kirby stuff. To be fair, we weren't betrayed in The Forgotten Land, so maybe kind companions will actually stick... Considering how fantastic Kirby and the Forgotten Land was, it's interesting to see the series go even further with an open approach. How much bigger The World Beyond looks also explains why it's been so long since we've seen a mainline entry from the series, which is thankfully coming to an end sooner rather than later.
