A new independent film studio, SuperCinema, launches Friday from commercial production company Concrete Studios. Based in Burbank, SuperCinema aims to produce, market and theatrically distribute films which it will distribute directly to audiences, so it can maintain control of each project from development through release. SuperCinema is led by Michael Burke, Rachel Williams, Justin Younesi, and Michael Younes. SuperCinema is under construction on a campus in Burbank’s Media District, which will include three stages, an LED volume stage, post-production facilities and collaborative workspaces. Popular on Variety Burbank’s Mayor Tamala Takahashi said in a statement, “We’re excited to welcome SuperCinema to our City. Their investment in a new studio campus brings new energy and opportunity to our community while reinforcing Burbank’s continued role as a place where filmmakers and entertainment companies can grow.” Two films are currently in production at SuperCinema: “Loose Ends,” which will be released in 2027 and an action-adventure film “The Backlot” from producers Range Media Partners and Artists for Artists. “Loose Ends” is about a personal injury lawyer, Jamsheed “Jerry” Shahbazi, who gets caught in an insurance fraud scheme and needs to find a way out of a deadly triangle between the Russian mob, the Feds and his own crazy Persian family. The logline for “The Backlot” reads as follows: When three ambitious kids sneak into an abandoned movie studio to finish their homemade movie, they accidentally awaken a horde of classic monsters and animatronic villains — forcing them, their single mom and a washed-up ex-stuntman to survive the night and become the heroes they always dreamed of being.” Concrete, the company behind SuperCinema, is a creative and production partner to many entertainment companies including Netflix, Disney, Paramount and NBCUniversal. “At Concrete, we have taken our love of storytelling and worked with some of the biggest studios and brands in the world to build stories and fandoms,” the company said in a statement. “SuperCinema allows us to bring that passion and expertise to the thing we love most: film. We are building a home for daring, filmmaker-driven movies and a generation of cinephiles that has fallen back in love with cinema.”
