HDT Robotics, also called BLADE, is one of five companies chosen to work with the U.S. Army on Project Sustainment. This program, run by the National Advanced Mobility Consortium (NAMC), focuses on creating robots that can deliver supplies in dangerous areas and help keep soldiers safer near the front lines. As part of the effort, BLADE’s Advanced Battle Lab will provide the Dire WOLF, a six-wheeled diesel-electric hybrid unmanned ground vehicle (UGV) built for logistics missions. The platform is based on the company’s WOLF-X robotic combat vehicle and draws on more than 20 years of BLADE’s experience in developing and manufacturing unmanned ground systems. Built for demanding logistics missions The Dire WOLF is designed to move supplies over both short and long distances in difficult terrain. The vehicle can carry thousands of pounds of mission-critical cargo, allowing it to transport ammunition, equipment, fuel, or other essential materials without exposing soldiers to unnecessary danger. The hybrid diesel-electric powertrain provides high horsepower for demanding missions, while its pivot-steering system allows the vehicle to make tight turns in confined spaces. According to the company, the platform can climb steep slopes, cross wide gaps, and scale vertical obstacles up to 2 feet (0.6 meters) high, giving it the ability to operate across rugged off-road environments. The Army’s Project Sustainment program focuses on using autonomous ground vehicles to improve battlefield resupply, particularly in areas where conventional logistics vehicles could face significant threats. Designed to keep moving in harsh terrain To improve reliability in difficult conditions, the Dire WOLF is equipped with Michelin’s non-pneumatic Tweels instead of conventional air-filled tires. These wheels eliminate the possibility of flat tires and are intended to maintain traction across heavily vegetated, rocky, or debris-filled terrain. The vehicle also includes an onboard battery system that stores electrical energy and can provide exportable power at forward operating locations. This capability could support equipment and systems deployed close to the battlefield without relying on separate power sources. The combination of hybrid propulsion and onboard energy storage is intended to extend the vehicle’s operational flexibility during logistics missions in remote or contested areas. Part of BLADE’s robotic vehicle family The Dire WOLF is now part of BLADE’s family of robotic vehicles, joining the Hunter WOLF and WOLF-X.
