New Disney Lorcana Commander Format, Coconut, Gets Official Rule Set

We finally have an official Disney Lorcana Commander format being beta-tested, and for now, it's called Coconut. This new format still revolves around 60-card decks with multiple copies per deck, but you'll build this deck around a digital card with special abilities, and it's encouraged that the format be played in groups of three or four. This announcement comes right as Attack of the Vine hits store shelves and Collector Booster boxes are still a hot topic within the community. Could this new format lead to specific cards being printed for it, much like with Commander cards in Magic: The Gathering? Only time will tell, but here's everything we know about Coconut in Lorcana in the meantime. What Is Coconut, And How Is It Like Commander? The reality is that Coconut and Commander aren't that similar. Other than building a deck around a specific card and being best played with groups of four, the two have very little in common. Based on what was revealed in today's official announcement, here is what we know about Coconut. It still uses 60-card decks. These decks can use up to three ink colors, but one must be the same as your Coconut leader. Coconut decks are built around one of 18 current beta test cards (three for each ink type). These cards are digital only (for now) and are selected when starting a new Coconut game in the Lorcana app. The Lore goal is 25 rather than 20. Other than the above changes, Coconut plays out like any other game of Lorcana, and the same deckbuilding rules apply. This means it isn't a singleton format, and you can still have up to four copies of cards in each deck. It's been made abundantly clear that this is just an open beta test, so there could be rules changes in the future, but for now, the Lorcana team wants to see how this testing period goes and take on any feedback from the community. You can provide feedback via a survey or the official Lorcana Discord server. Does This Tie Into Collector Boosters? Right now, there's no confirmation that the card pool is going to expand and that Coconut-exclusive cards are coming; the format is simply in too early a development phase for this to be implemented by the year's end. At least that's my assumption. However, the biggest lingering question over Collector Boosters comes down to whether there are enough cards per set to justify a whole new product, but if a new official format were to take off and have its own little subsection of exclusive cards, with all base Lorcana cards still being legal in the format, then that's a big step towards said justification. You can try out Coconut at Gen Con and Gamescom under the supervision of the Lorcana team. I do think that the reveal of Coconut and this open beta test is linked to the expansion of Disney Lorcana as a game, and the Collector Boosters are also part of this, even if the two are not directly linked to each other. This is where the unfortunate leak of the Collector Boosters comes into play, because if Ravensburger had the time to reveal everything when it planned to, these moves may all make a little more sense or come without additional speculation attached to them. I'm still excited to see what Collector Booster will bring to Lorcana, and the soft-launch of this new format gives me increased hope that the product will be good for the game, but time will tell if that is the case or not.
