‘Never After Dark’ Filmmaker Will Next Remake the Already Perfect ‘Pulse’

They remade Suspiria. A do-over of Possession is currently in production. And now, fans of already perfect films have another reason to weep. It seems a fresh take on Pulse, Kiyoshi Kurosawa‘s dread-infused 2001 chiller that predicted the isolating agony the then-novel internet would bring, is coming our way next. Pulse, which will creep into your brain, take hold, and make you sleep with the lights on, has actually already been remade. Though the 2006 American version was co-written by Wes Craven and starred Kristen Bell, it immediately faded into obscurity, trailing a pair of even more forgettable sequels in its wake. So why Pulse, again, now? As Deadline tells us, the filmmaker stepping into Kurosawa’s haunted footprints is Dave Boyle, whose breakout film, Never After Dark, hits theaters in a few weeks, buoyed by a successful festival run and words of praise from Stephen King and Black Phone filmmaker Scott Derrickson. “His hiring for Pulse tracks, as he’s long told stories either set in Japan or revolving around Japanese characters,” the trade notes, and that includes Never After Dark. However, we can’t assume it will take that focus for sure, since “plot details, including locale, for the new take are being kept under wraps. All that’s known is that it’s set in the modern era, revolving around a new set of characters.” Boyle is attached to direct and also do a fresh pass on the existing script by Luke Piotrowski; among the producers is Parker Finn, who directed the Smile films and… yes… the new Possession.
