Netflix's Sequel To Beloved 153-Episode Drama Series Is Officially Being Cut From Streaming

Published Oct 28, 2026, 4:45 PM EDT Adrienne Tyler is a movies & TV features writer, with a focus on horror. She has written for Netflix, FanSided, & more. She was a regular guest on the Netfreaks podcast and was a YouTuber at some point. Guillermo del Toro said “hi” to her once. In 2016, Netflix released a long-awaited sequel to a beloved drama series, and now, ten years later, it’s being removed from streaming. In addition to producing original content and having an extensive catalog of movies and TV shows, Netflix has also saved a couple of canceled TV shows by giving them a new home and expanded movies and TV shows with sequels and reboots exclusive to the platform. Some of these have become some of the best TV shows of all time, while others weren’t exactly the fans’ favorites. TV shows like Fuller House and One Day at a Time are some examples of Netflix expanding well-known and popular TV shows with sequels and reimaginings, and in 2016, Gilmore Girls joined that list. Created by Amy Sherman-Palladino, Gilmore Girls premiered on The WB in 2000 and ran for seven seasons, ending in 2007. Although Gilmore Girls had a satisfying ending that was well-received, there were hopes for a new season or reboot, and in 2016, Netflix delivered the miniseries Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life. The sequel series is just four episodes long and brings back the main characters of Gilmore Girls, such as Lauren Graham, Alexis Bledel, Kelly Bishop, Melissa McCarthy, Scott Patterson, and Keiko Agena. However, A Year in the Life couldn’t match the success and quality of Gilmore Girls and was criticized for its story, characterization, and its cliffhanger ending. Unfortunately, Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life will be removed from streaming soon. Gilmore Girls: A Year In The Life Is Being Removed From Netflix Exactly 10 Years After It Debuted Gilmore Girls ends with Rory accepting a job as a reporter to cover Barack Obama’s presidential campaign and his bid for the Democratic Party nomination for an online magazine. As a result, Rory has to leave Stars Hollow in three days, and so Luke, Sookie, and the rest of town rush to give her a surprise farewell party. Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life is set a decade after that, with each episode covering one of the four seasons of the year. Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life, then, sees Rory working as a freelance journalist and going to visit her friends in London, New York, and Stars Hollow. First, she visits Logan (Matt Czuchry) in London, then Paris in New York, and her family and friends (including Jess) in Stars Hollow. As mentioned above, Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life ends on a cliffhanger that has been heavily criticized for how it portrays Rory, and there has been no resolution to it ten years later. Following the steps of its main show, Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life is leaving Netflix on November 25, 2026. Gilmore Girls was removed from Netflix on June 30, 2026, but it found a new home on Prime Video, where all seven seasons can be streamed now. Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life leaving Netflix is a bigger deal, as it’s an original production of the streamer, and while it’s not the first one to be removed, it still comes as a surprising move. As happened to the others, the reason behind the removal is an expired licensing deal. Gilmore Girls: A Year In The Life Doesn't Have A Streaming Home (For Now) Unlike Gilmore Girls, which already had a new home ready to receive it once it was removed from Netflix, the future of A Year in the Life is unknown. At the time of writing, Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life doesn’t have a streaming home yet, and it’s now trickier to predict where it could end up streaming. The world of streaming has changed a lot in recent years, with platforms sharing the distribution rights to different movies and TV shows, thus having the same ones available at the same time. Gilmore Girls and A Year in the Life are Warner Bros. property, but the former is now on Prime Video, so it’s hard to say if A Year in the Life could end up on HBO Max, Prime Video, or any other streaming platform. Hopefully, Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life will find a new streaming home soon, especially for those looking to revisit the entire show during the fall and winter.
