He has also written for The Irish Times, Den Of Geek, Little White Lies and many more. It's pronounced Paw-rick, BTW. One of Netflix's rare movie franchises is best described as John Wick meets The Raid, and it's soon set to expand in a major way. Despite many attempts to get one off the ground, an American remake of The Raid never came together. This is a blessing in a way, since the brutal simplicity of the original never could have been replicated or beaten. Instead, there followed many movies inspired by The Raid's constant action and lean story, such as Mile 22, The Night Comes for Us or 2023's Kill. The John Wick movie franchise fits neatly into that selection tpp. While this Keanu Reeves saga is heavier on plot than The Raid, they both take a similar approach to cleanly shot, grueling fight sequences. John Wick: Chapter 3 even gave supporting roles to The Raid co-stars Yayan Ruhian and Cecep Arif Rahman. Another American franchise that takes some Raid influence is Extraction, one of Netflix's rare ongoing film series. The first two outings cast Chris Hemsworth as a mercenary who has to punch, drive and shoot his way through dangerous rescue missions, and the franchise is set to get much bigger in scope. The first installment quickly became one of Netflix's most-viewed originals, and while the ending of Extraction suggested Hemsworth's Rake didn't survive, he quickly when the 2023 sequel arrived. This was another success, so naturally, Extraction 3 is on the way. Plot details are thin at the moment, but joining returning players like Hemsworth and Golshifteh Farahani are newcomers such as Pierce Brosnan, Joe Taslim (from The Raid, FYI) and Don Lee. Extraction's show-stopping 11-minute, "one" take-action sequence is actually comprised of 36 individual shots stitched together. While many franchises like to pretend that the third entry will be the final part in a trilogy, that doesn't appear to be the case with Extraction. If the movie is another success and Hemsworth is open to making more, there is no reason a fourth or fifth entry couldn't happen beyond that. Again, given that this is one of Netflix's few movie franchises, the streamer is invested in keeping it running. Extraction's Universe Is Expanding Even Further Image via Netflix That said, Hemsworth has also spoken of how physically grueling it is to make an Extraction film, so he might be looking for an end point for Tyler Rake's redemption arc. That might be why Netflix is looking to turn the saga into a brand that can focus on new characters. While the third offering is currently filming, the franchise's first spinoff titled Tygo has already wrapped. This South Korean actioner will introduce Don Lee's titular character, who is described as a former child soldier turned mercenary. Presumably, Tygo will arrive before Extraction 3, and given that Lee's Tygo features in both, perhaps the spinoff will set up the third movie's plot. It also feels like a safe bet Idris Elba's mysterious mercenary recruiter Alcott will make a cameo to tie everything together. The entire franchise is based on the graphic novel Ciudad, written by Ande Parks and the Russo Brothers. Thus, the latter siblings have been heavily involved with the Extraction series since the beginning and have worked hard to get spinoffs going. It seems like those plans are finally taking shape, as in addition to Tygo, a TV offshoot dubbed Mercenary: An Extraction Series is also on the way. This will be fronted by Boyd Holbrook and Omar Sy, with the show taking place in Libya. Assuming these spinoffs are successful, they might receive sequels or additional seasons of their own. Again, there's no reason to believe Hemsworth is walking away following Extraction 3, but Netflix is wise to establish a wider universe while he's still an active part of the franchise. Either way, the future is looking bright for Netflix's action series and at this pace, it will soon overtake the John Wick movies in terms of instalments. Extraction 3 Director Sam Hargrave Writers David Weil Cast Golshifteh Farahani Nik Khan Created by Joe Russo, Anthony Russo, Andre Parks, Fernando Fernando León González, Eric Skillman First Film Extraction Cast Chris Hemsworth, Rudhraksh Jaiswal, Randeep Hooda, David Harbour, Idris Elba, Golshifteh Farahani Character(s) Tyler Rake Extraction is a multi-media franchise initially conceived as a 2014 graphic novel known as Ciudad that follows the exploits of a black ops mercenary member named Tyler Rake. Tyler consistently finds himself behind enemy lines as he takes on increasingly more difficult missions fraught with dangerous military exercises and potential betrayal waiting around the corner at every turn.
