Netflix’s ‘I Will Find You’ Has a Wild Plot Hole That Still Doesn’t Make Sense After Watching All Eight Episodes

If you're like us, you will have spent your weekend avoiding the heat and staying in to binge-watch the latest Harlan Coben drama I Will Find You on Netflix. The tense eight-part drama follows an American dad who is wrongfully convicted of his son's murder, and so when his sister-in-law presents him with a photo of his son seemingly alive years later, he escapes prison to find his beloved child.The series is full of intrigue, endless questions and shocking revelations. While we binged our way through it, there was one major storyline that really didn't add up—and we weren't the only ones to be very confused, as many fans were complaining on social media about Hayden and why he didn't find out Matthew was *actually* his own child (which he turned out to not even be) before he staged the kidnapping.By the end of the series it became clear that Rachel (Britt Lower)'s ex-boyfriend Hayden (Milo Ventimiglia) had been the one to kidnap David (Sam Worthington) and Cheryl (Erin Richards)'s son Matthew when he was just three years old. But, er, why exactly?NetflixWell he was (and still is obsessed) with his ex-girlfriend Rachel and so when he found her name had been registered at a birth fertility clinic, he got his sperm implanted into Rachel and believed she would then be carrying his baby. Except, it wasn't actually Rachel using the service, but her sister Cheryl, who had registered under Rachel's name (which in itself is a wild sub-plot).He then attended a birthday party a few years later and believed Matthew to be his son. And then went on with the elaborate kidnapping plan that saw him replace Matthew with the body of terminally ill child Martin Bischoff and planned for the police to discover what they thought was Matthew's body, which would have been damaged by the fire. This would have then left him free to raise Matthew as his own and by extension, his and Rachel's child, serving his obsessed with her.However, rather than finding out through a legal channel if Matthew was his, he planned an elaborate kidnapping routine that hurt many people in the process, not to mention landed David in jail for years.NetflixAnd is it just us or does that not make any sense? Illogical plot… if I was some rich dude who thought Cheryl had my sperm baby I’d use my resources to at least verify the kid is actually mine before you know.. bringing in a dying orphan from another country, brutally murdering that child, swapping it, kidnapping, and raising the kid in a secret life. Like damn that went from 0-100 real quick."While another said: "Wouldn't you do that BEFORE you go through all that trouble? Seriously. He had already brought the kid over and killed him before having the results. So dumb."And another added: "If he only had the foresight to do the test before the kidnapping so many lives could have been spared. But then again I guess the whole point is that the guy is a psychopath and probably would have hurt people anyway."The last reviewer explains some of the justification as to why Hayden's behavior sort of adds up. He wasn't acting like a logical man. Rather than go through legal channels or even doing some sort of dodgy DNA test where he steals Matthew's hairbrush or toothbrush to find out if he's the father, he's a man obsessed with the woman he loves and the idea of raising their child together.This is therefore why he steals Matthew rather than just find another way to find out if he's his child. It's not exactly morally correct behavior, but it does tie up the plot hole.Although, we still wouldn't be condoning his very erratic behavior.I Will Find You is available on Netflix now.
