There's a reason shows like Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Charmed, Angel, The X-Files, Supernatural, and more are still so popular, even years after they've come to an end. Watching well-written, complex characters fight the "forces of darkness" in a modern-day setting, unraveling conspiracies, and sneaking into cemeteries? There's nothing like it. Streamers, and Netflix, in particular, have been trying to recapture the magic of those network TV hits for years. Sometimes, they succeed, as was the case with 2023's Lockwood & Co., Netflix's eight-episode adaptation of Jonathan Stroud's book series of the same name. The series is set in an alternate reality version of London in which ghosts are very much real and plague the city after sunset. There's one catch: only kids and teens can see, hear, or fight these apparitions, risking their lives night after night while the adults remain safe behind closed doors. Lockwood & Co. follows Anthony Lockwood (Cameron Chapman), Lucy Carlyle (Ruby Stokes), and George Karim (Ali Hadji-Heshmati), a talented trio of young ghost detectives as they fight to keep their little independent Psychical Investigation Agency afloat while competing with some of the most prestigious (and powerful) companies in the UK. Lockwood & Co. is the perfect blend of horror, intricate storytelling, and compelling characters, an excellent example of how to translate a story from the page to the small screen. Lockwood & Co. Is One Of Netflix's Best Book Adaptations Credit: Parisa Taghizadeh/Netflix Creator Joe Cornish did an incredible job adapting Stroud's books. The show has a rich, unnerving atmosphere, and the season's storylines are so well constructed, honoring the original work while making it accessible to viewers in a new format. The Netflix adaptation cleverly combines the stories from the first two Lockwood & Co. books, building out its mythology and its haunted version of London with a real touch of flair and imagination. Crucially, the season never feels overly burdened by exposition. Viewers are dropped into this world as Lucy makes her way to London following a traumatic incident during another hunt, discovering the city and her new co-workers through her eyes. It's a great cross between quintessentially British shows like Doctor Who and Merlin and streaming's slicker, high-budget fantasy adaptations, filled with genuinely scary special effects, gorgeous sets — their base of operations feels wonderfully lived-in and cozy — and strong performances. Chapman, Stokes, and Hadji-Heshmati are the beloved book characters from Lockwood & Co. come to life. Chapman is particularly excellent as the charismatic, grieving, and reckless Anthony Lockwood. It's impossible to tell that this was Chapman's first, and so far only, acting role; he completely knocked it out of the park as the show's titular character. The subtle chemistry between Chapman and Stokes really sells the depth of their relationship, and Hadji-Heshmati is marvelously sarcastic and driven as George, the trio's best and most curious paranormal researcher. Realistically, it only needed one or two more seasons to finish its most important storylines, revealing the secret behind the locked door in Anthony's house and the origins of the worsening ghost Problem. Even now, three years later, fans are still signing a "Save Lockwood & Co." petition on Change.org; it currently has over 50,000 signatures. The latest signature was added just two weeks ago. Thankfully, despite the show's tragic fate, Lockwood & Co. is still absolutely worth watching. Any lingering questions can be answered by reading Stroud's five-book series (plus a bonus, Anthony-centric novella), and the show is the perfect companion to the books, honoring the original story while offering a fresh perspective.
