Willy Wonka's Netflix Movie Is One Year Away, And It's Already Breaking Franchise Tradition Published Oct 20, 2026, 6:30 PM EDT Karlis has been obsessing over television and movie news since he first learned how to read. He has worked in tech, as a musician, and in journalism with a well-rounded knowledge base of pop-culture throughout the eras. He claims that he has memorized the entire Internet Movie Database, and to date no one has been able to refute this. Holding a Bachelor's Degree in Religion and Culture from Wilfrid Laurier University, Karlis loves to examine the intersections of popular science-fiction and culture. His latest novel MASS. is available now on Amazon and examines a world where obesity has become a federal crime. Roald Dahl's classic novel Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is set to receive a new adaptation in one year with a film that breaks franchise tradition in a couple of shocking ways - Charlie vs. the Chocolate Factory. Following three excellent Willy Wonka movies, including the most recent prequel starring Timothée Chalamet, it is exciting that the franchise has multiple projects on the immediate horizon. In addition to Netflix's upcoming film, there have been plans discussed for a Chalamet-starring Wonka 2. The first prequel was released in 2023 where it told an original story set in the world of Roald Dahl's book, featuring a fantastic cast that included Olivia Colman, Hugh Grant, and Rowan Atkinson among many other excellent stars. The rights to Willy Wonka adaptations are somewhat complicated. The first film in 1971 was financed by Quaker Oats as a marketing push to sell more chocolate bars; Warner Bros. then eventually picked up the film for further releases, as well as rights for their own Wonka live-action films. However, Netflix has since secured further rights to the material. In 2021, Netflix acquired the Roald Dahl Story Company and has set off on developing films and series of their own based on the author's works. Arguably the most exciting of these is a new Willy Wonka film with a unique twist, which is now only a year away from being released. Charlie Vs. The Chocolate Factory Is An Animated Movie Image via Netflix Netflix is set to release Charlie vs. the Chocolate Factory, a new animated story drawing from Roald Dahl's classic novel, on November 5, 2027. The film is set to have a global theatrical release, reflecting an increasing trend from the streamer, before becoming available on the Netflix service on December 22, 2027. The upcoming film stars Taika Waititi as the famous chocolatier, fresh from a stint in prison after turning a child into a blueberry. Returned to his iconic factory, Wonka must face off against a new group of teenagers who plan to steal the candy titan's famous and priceless Wonka Bar. While little has been revealed about the film, described as the successor to Netflix's KPop Demon Hunters due to Sony's involvement in distribution, the biggest change from previous adaptations is that the new film is set to be the first feature-length animated adaptation of the novel. This will allow for a unique look at Wonka's factory and candy. In addition, the antagonistic relationship between the kids and Wonka himself is a fresh spin on the material. The kids all look to be new characters, with Kit Connor voicing Charlie Paley, notably a different character than the original novel's Charlie Bucket. The movie has incredible potential, and with this original twist, could become the best adaptation yet. The Netflix Willy Wonka Film Takes Place In Modern-Day London Charlie vs. the Chocolate Factory will be set in contemporary London, which is another exciting change to the material. This new setting will give the opportunity to tell a fresh and timely story with the material, which confronts concepts including poverty and homelessness. The setting of the previous Wonka movies is ambiguous, but each is given a unique period gloss. The book was released in 1964, and the first film adaptation from 1971 gave the film a heightened setting for the time, skewed by its fantastical edges. Further adaptations have loosely played with similar aesthetic sensibilities. Tim Burton's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory applied a period setting to the material, and Paul King's Wonka doubled down on this, crafting a unique environment with several charmingly heightened elements. Charlie vs. the Chocolate Factory and its unique setting have the potential to go a long way toward making the new film a success. With a great voice cast, strong animation, and a great studio behind it, the new adaptation could become the best and most scrumdiddlyumptious version of the material yet.
