A TV insider said: “This isn’t just moving further into ITV’s territory with another big entertainment show. “It’s also trying to capture some of the current desire for guessing games, typified in shows such as The Masked Singer and The Celebrity Traitors.” The streaming giant has increasingly been trying to tap into the markets traditionally held by the main terrestrial channels, with mixed results. It has had hits by poaching big BBC dramas including Peaky Blinders and Luther, and it could have further success with a revival of Channel 4 comedy The Inbetweeners. But Netflix’s bid to do a take on ITV’s I’m A Celebrity . . . Get Me Out Of Here! didn’t work out quite so well. Celebrity Bear Hunt was axed after it debuted last year — despite featuring a number of star competitors, as well as being hosted by adventurer Bear Grylls and former This Morning presenter Holly Willoughby. Most read in TV Hopefully Blockheads will fare better as it has obvious parallels with Saturday night favourite The Masked Singer, which will introduce new guesser Alan Carr to the line-up when it returns next year. The Netflix series also has the benefit of being put together by South Shore, the production company which already makes gameshows The Floor and Cooking With The Stars for ITV.
