But new Labour Energy Secretary Miatta Fahnbulleh yesterday finally admitted an important truth behind spiralling costs: Net Zero levies ARE a contributing factor. Miliband stupidly agreed to pay way over the odds in guaranteed subsidies to wind farm firms whether they produced electricity or not. But the creaking grid network is still hugely reliant on gas to keep the lights on, which pushes up bills. Britain is stuck in the worst of all worlds. As a result, being saddled with the world’s highest electricity prices has decimated UK industry, wiped out pubs and sent food and drink prices soaring. But rather than taking decisive action to fix the mess, Prime Ministers have reached for the short term sticking plaster of a taxpayer-funded bailout. Andy Burnham became the latest when he spent £850million on an average £45 cut in bills. Within a month of it being announced, it has been swallowed up entirely. Yesterday, the PM hinted a vastly expensive new bailout is on the way, possibly for poorer families only, in the Autumn Budget. Where will he find the money from? The bin workers have been on strike for 18 months. Now Britain’s second city wants to impose more misery with blanket 20mph speed limits. Could it be the decision is linked to Birmingham City Council drowning in debt and barely functioning? Given that 20mph zones increase journey times and keep cars on the roads for longer, is there a “green” argument for them? Perhaps the city’s rabble rainbow coalition of Greens, Lib Dems and Muslim independents are hoping for a bigger slice of the stacks of cash coming the Government’s way from the inevitable massive increase in speeding fines?
