Nebraska has fired offensive coordinator Dana Holgorsen, On3’s Pete Nakos reported. The decision comes after the Cornhuskers suffered their fourth straight loss on Friday night against Illinois. Holgorsen had been with Nebraska since 2024, starting as a consultant before taking over as offensive coordinator later that year. He then stayed in the role after taking over for Marcus Satterfield full-time in 2025. Previously, Holgorsen was the head coach at Houston, where he went 31-28 from 2019-23. $39.99 gets you a FULL year of On3 | Rivals national coverage Nebraska head coach Matt Rhule later announced Holgorsen’s departure, which comes amid the four-game skid during which the Huskers have failed to score 20 or more points. Co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Glenn Thomas will take over play-calling the rest of the season. “Like so many of you, I am angry, I am disappointed and I am frustrated with our results this season,” Rhule said in a statement. “As the head coach, I am ultimately responsible for every aspect of our program – including wins and losses – and it is my responsibility to make changes when they are warranted. Watch on Fubo (Try for Free) “While there are many areas that need improvement, our offensive plan and execution is simply not working. Earlier today, I relieved offensive coordinator Dana Holgorsen of his duties. As I have recently shared, Dana has a fantastic offensive mind, he is a strong leader, and he has done great work here at Nebraska. But simply, we need a change. Co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Glenn Thomas will take over play-calling duties.” Through nine games this year, Nebraska ranks fifth in the Big Ten with 425 total yards of offense per game. The Cornhuskers are also averaging 30.2 points, which sits seventh in the Big Ten, but have failed to top 20 points during every game of the losing streak. Prior to the skid, Nebraska was off to a 5-0 start and averaging 43.6 points. Since then, the Cornhuskers are 0-4 and scoring 13.5 points per game. During Friday night’s road game against Illinois, NU put up 425 yards of offense, but had just 13 points. “The Nebraska fan base has high expectations and I embrace them, and I also know of their passionate support of the young men in our program,” Rhule said. “I hope they will continue to be there for our players with very important games still ahead. Our entire program is determined to finish this season strong.” Nebraska will now get ready for its final three-game stretch of the 2026 season. The Huskers will head to Rutgers in Week 11 before the season’s final home game against Ohio State. That then sets up the rivalry matchup against Iowa to close things out.
