NE monsoon turns play area at Nageswara Rao park into pond

This image was taken on October 20. After a mild downpour on the night of October 20, water was seen collected at the children’s play area and on walkers’ paths. Some amount of water was also found on the concreted portion of the badminton court. It may be noted that originally the area of the park was a pond, which was at a lower level than the surrounding roads. The contractor should have taken this into account and raised the floor area of the park first before doing other things. If there is a heavy, heavy downpour, the situation may be worse. The Greater Chennai Corporation needs to address this problem immediately and find a permanent solution in the interest of park users.Parantharami ManiOur fear about Nageswara Rao Park was not unfounded, as pictures of water stagnation at the children’s area of the park on October 18 around 8.30 a.m. show. That clearly is the result of of indiscriminate concretisation. Waterlogging in the pathways make walking difficult. The authorities can still do away with the concrete and replace it with natural surfaces.V. SubramaniamResponse from executive engineer, GCC: There has been water logging at a few areas in the park and the contractor has been apprised about it. On October 23, the contractor had visited the park to study the corrections that need to be carried out. The agency will be constructing silt champers at different locations, especially where water is not draining easily and work on this will start soon. Published - October 24, 2026 08:47 pm IST
