NCAA rules UConn DL Esean Carter ineligible ahead of Week 1

UConn Football has been dealt a massive blow before taking the field for the Week 1 clash against the Lafayette Leopards. Veteran defensive lineman Esean Carter is no longer eligible to play in 2026, per the NCAA who claims his red-shirt 2022 season does not count. Carter was one of many players who made the jump to Storrs over from Toledo, following his coaches to a new opportunity. Coach Jason Candle brought with him plenty of talent, youth, and experience all in one transfer portal class. Now the Huskies may be faced with a situation that forces Carter to remain among the fans for the 2026 season. Never miss breaking news or another article again. At the moment, Carter is battling to make his way back to the field for the 2026 season after previously being told he had another year of eligibility remaining. Carter originally joined the Toledo Rockets as a three-star recruit ahead of the 2021 season, a season in which he would only play two games. The defensive lineman retained his freshman eligibility, and then again played in just two games during the 2022 season. Carter went on to become a major part of the team in the 2023, 2024, and 2025 seasons. Per the report from Anthony, Carter was under the impression that his 2022 season met the requirements for a red-shirt season. Unfortunately the NCAA has deemed that Carter has been physically able to play the past four seasons. Student-athletes are given one opportunity to red-shirt, and any subsequent requests need to be medical hardship waivers. The loss of Carter is devastating news for UConn Football as the program had been practicing and preparing for the 2026 season with the help of the defensive lineman. ***NCAA Update*** Coach Jason Candle and strength and conditioning director Brad Bichey submitted paperwork to the NCAA, which provided proof of a foot injury suffered by Carter. The NCAA informed UConn Football and Carter that the defensive lineman is eligible to play following a review of the submitted documents. Carter is currently fully expected to play the 2026 season upon review by the NCAA.
