NCAA clears Cincinnati in Brendan Sorsby betting case

Published September 3, 2026 03:03 PM The NCAA’s handling of the Brendan Sorsby gambling case included an investigation regarding his most recent stop. The probe has ended with a finding that the University of Cincinnati violated no rules.The investigation began after Sorsby’s agent, Ron Slavin, said Cincinnati was aware of Sorsby’s conduct for two years but took no action.“Earlier this summer, NCAA enforcement staff completed an inquiry into a former Cincinnati student-athlete’s prohibited betting activity during his time at the university,” Cincinnati senior associate athletic director for communications Zach Stipe said in a statement, via ESPN. “The inquiry is now closed and the student-athlete was found to have committed a Level III violation. Cincinnati worked closely with the NCAA throughout the process, which began when the initial reports of impermissible sports wagering began.”The Level III violation does not apply to the school.Sorsby’s gambling came to light after he transferred to Texas Tech. After the NCAA terminated his eligibility, Sorsby won an injunction allowing him to play. The Big 12 strong-armed Texas Tech into abandoning that plan, prompting Sorsby to apply for the supplemental draft. In turn, the NFL refused to hold a supplemental draft, essentially freezing him out of pro or college football until 2027.Sorsby and the NFL eventually reached an agreement pursuant to which Sorsby agreed not to sue the league, and the league agreed to let him enter the draft next April.
