Muscat: Nama Water Services has completed 67 percent of the third phase of Sohar's sewerage network expansion, a strategic OMR 19 million infrastructure project aimed at strengthening wastewater services, supporting urban growth and enhancing environmental sustainability in North Al Batinah Governorate.The project forms part of the company's broader strategy to build a more efficient, resilient and sustainable sewerage system capable of meeting the demands of rapid urban and economic development while improving the quality of life in the governorate. The expansion covers the areas of Al-Hambar, Ghayl Al-Shaboul, Al-Tarif and Al-Waqiba, as well as the coastal localities of Al-Sabara, Al-Shizaw and Al-Hazeera. Once completed, the upgraded network is expected to improve wastewater management, increase operational reliability and support continued urban and economic development in Sohar.Nama Water Services said the project has also generated OMR 1.5 million in local added value so far through the participation of local businesses and the employment of Omani expertise, reinforcing the company's commitment to supporting the national economy and increasing local content in infrastructure projects.Engineer Mohammed bin Harb Al-Makhmari, Director General of Sector Projects Implementation in North Al Batinah Governorate, described the project as one of Nama Water Services' key strategic investments to strengthen infrastructure readiness.He said the initiative reflects the company's vision of developing a flexible and sustainable sewerage system that can accommodate future growth while contributing to environmental protection and improving the quality of public services in line with Oman Vision 2040.Project Manager Engineer Mohammed Al-Muqbali said construction is progressing according to schedule while maintaining the highest standards of quality and safety.The first phase includes the construction of 40 kilometres of sewerage pipelines, 3 kilometres of aerial discharge networks, 3 kilometres of pumping lines, a pumping station in Al-Tarif, a lifting station in Ghayl Al-Shaboul, completion of works at the Al-Hambar (1) pumping station, aerial discharge stations in Al-Hazeera and Al-Shizaw, and the upgrading of several existing pumping stations. This phase is scheduled for completion during the second quarter of 2027.The second phase will focus on household connections, linking 3,432 residential, commercial and government units to the expanded sewerage network and wastewater treatment plant. It is expected to be completed in the second quarter of 2028.According to Nama Water Services, the completed project will significantly improve the reliability and efficiency of Sohar's sewerage system while delivering long-term environmental and economic benefits, strengthening infrastructure resilience and supporting sustainable urban development across North Al Batinah.
