Nairobi acrobats turn traffic junctions into open-air stages

At Nairobi's busiest intersections, young acrobats are transforming traffic lights into makeshift stages, performing daring routines to earn a living amid limited job opportunities. These acrobats are always seen flipping, juggling and forming human pyramids between lanes of traffic before weaving through waiting vehicles to collect donations from motorists.For the group, each performance is both a source of income and a chance to build a future."When we come here, at least at the end of the day, you get something that can sustain you until the next day. This place is like an office. It is also a good place for marketing ourselves," added Owino.However, sometimes, some days are very challenging. Some of the hurdles they face range from rain, broken traffic lights and safety concerns that can stop performances before they begin."The biggest risk is cars and motorbikes because you need to be very, very alert. Some drivers are not careful, and some are drunk. So it's really dangerous, but we still do it," explained Leonard Wadu.In a city known for its traffic jams, the performers have turned delays into opportunity. Earning anywhere from $4 on a slow day to $100 on a good one, they continue to prove that talent and determination can thrive, even at a red light.
