Mystery as major UK shopping centre is forced to CLOSE with apology taped to doors

A MAJOR UK shopping centre has shut for the sixth day running as mystery surrounds its abrupt closure. Customers were first notified that the site was temporarily closed prior to the bank holiday. The 34-year-old centre has shut temporarily although the exact reason is unknown Credit: Alamy Buttermarket Centre, in Ipswich, has now been shuttered for just under a week as a result of “unforeseen circumstances”. Customers were first notified on Friday (August 28) via Facebook, however the site did not clarify the reason behind its temporary closure. Sign up for the Money newsletter Thank you! The entrance to the centre has also been taped shut with a sign displaying, “Sorry, it is closed”. The closure has affected the centre’s car park, as well as all 32 retail units within the 270,000 sq ft building. As of this morning, TK Maxx has been the only shop on the site to re-open, however access is limited to a side-street entrance on Queen Street. Customers have repeatedly asked for updates, however the centre has only said that it was “working hard to reopen the Buttermarket and the centre car park” and thanked shoppers for their patience. The Buttermarket is home to known brands including Krispy Kreme, New Look, Omniplex Cinema and Wagamamas. Many also use the site for PureGym, which has formed the majority of shoppers’ requests for the centre to reopen. Most read in Money One user said: “Really hoping the gym opens soon!!” While another added: “I feel sorry for those poor shops and businesses unable to secure revenue on a bank holiday weekend!!” The Buttermarket said they will continue to issue updates online, with more details coming soon.
